Just wondering,

Seeing as Sony give instructions to replace the Hard Drive of the PS3 in the manual, who has actually replaced theirs with a higher capacity SATA?

The process is so easy I may consider doing this so I can store more media :), just wanted first hand impressions off people who've done it.

What is the biggest drive you can get for it? I understand you have to stick to 5400rpm though for optimal heat dissipation.

JoeBob stuck in a 120GB HDD in his 20GB PS3, said it was quite painless.

IIRC you should use the 5400rpm drives as the faster ones are actually slower (go figure)
Standard Laptop HDD's fit straight in but you could use any SATA drive you want, even one from a PC, but you would need to leave some cables coming out the bottom of it and have the drive just laying there, not a good idea.

It sits in a drive cage.. you just put the drive in the cage and slide it in to place

I believe the manual recommends a 2.5inch SATA drive (laptop), so I'd imagine it's limited to a max of 160GB at 5400rpm!

But I guess it voids your warrenty?

well xbox360 owners on here are always on about streaming media from there pc s to watch through there 360 etc ,

i guess you could just put all the media on a big hard drive and put it in the ps3.

is there currently any need to upgrade the HDD?
in the future maybe when they introduce larger files like TV shows etc

True, but you are probably aswell doing it now when the HDD is blank rather than deciding to upgrade and having to move your saves and DLC etc.

So you can upgrade the HDD easily enough without Sony throwing a hissy fit...? What about the wifi, can it be added afterwards, or a non-Sony model used? If so, buying the cheaper model and upgrading it manually sounds an interesting option.

I wouldnt imagine it would be easy to mod it to accept Wifi, unless you mean a USB one liek the 360 has. Maybe Sony plan to release something in the future?

HDD took me less than 5 minutes to swap and I couldn't see any of the usual 'warranty void if removed' stickers blocking the way. Once it was in i just booted it up, the PS3 formatted it in an amazingly short time (about 2 seconds for a 120GB) and that was it - done. Luckily I had backed up my game saves etc to a USB flash drive before hand so the only thing I had to do was download all my demos, trailers etc again. I didn't even need to enter my user details again as it was all stalled in the OS memory.

I think the user upgradeable HD is a brilliant idea from Sony, will save PS3 owners paying absolutely ridiculous prices for "Official" drives with a poor capacity a la Microsoft 360 drives...
It isn't something you would have expected them to allow, but it's a nice touch.

Toatally agree it nice to see sony alllowing us to decide how big and what quality HD we want on the system if we want to make the choice away from what they provide

I agree too... it is a very nice feature. Shame about the wifi, but as you say, they may do a Nintendo/Microsoft and release a USB version.
