I looked this up and it seems to be Steve McCurry. I'd never heard of him, and I'm probably one of the few to have not known about the afghan girl before yesterday. His photographs are mind blowing, mostly the way he captures the eyes. Quite a few look like they were taken in a studio when they weren't. Like this one, it looks amazing.

And these are all incredible. The way he processed the photo of the flat cap boy looks like something from
the 1920s.

Is he still regarded as the best or is there better? Hard to imagine anyone better, at least, for capturing faces.

Right, thanks Raymond, I'll go look at some of their work. When you think of the millions of people around the world with cameras, it must be quite a feeling to be known as the best or one of the best in the world.

Well I'll put them in this order of preference. Scholler, very interesting face photos, really illuminates the eyes in a similar way to Steve McCurry. Leibovitz, interesting compositions.. Testino, of course amazing photos, but slick fashion photos just don't do much for me.

How do you gauge who is the best photographer in the world? I know several people, some related to me, some of them award winning, who knock out some incredible images that seem just as good to me as some of the names above.

the face stuff is one of his project, the other stuff that is far more impressive in terms of creative process I find. Google “Scholler Tarantino” and you’ll find a photo and know what I mean. There is one with jack black in the bath, Tony Hawk on a skateboard in the kitchen etc.

It's subjective as it's creative. Whilst I really like that image for instance, it isn't without fault to me. That glass in the bottom left corner is a distraction as is the tiny amount of the one showing above it. They add nothing to the image either as there's so little showing.

This book is fantastic.

I’ve been to Scholler’s exhibition in Stockholm, he prints those portraits really big, like 2m tall and the detail in the faces are incredible. You can stand back and admire the facial expression or you can move in and look at every pore.

Which is this book, the one above has a mixture of his work. I paid like £40 before it went out of print.
