hi, just wondering what the closest thing to WHS2011 linux has to offer.
i want something thats simple to setup, has media streaming over internet (ideally via web browser) and is simple to access via the web for remote desktop etc.

is that not just music? what about pictures and films?

Your google-fu is weak ;)

Google ampache:

Ampache is a web based audio/video streaming application and file manager allowing you to access your music & videos from anywhere, using almost any internet enabled device.

You would need to set up port forwarding through your router, but it should work... depending on the upload speed you have at home.

well it works via WHS 2011 so i cant see it being any different :) i just dont like WHS 2011 too much, so was looking for an alternative.

so basically i need an os, then addons to get it to work, there isnt an out of the box media server?

You install amahi on your box, then via the amahi web console, you install ampache... almost like installing an app on your phone.

How do you stream your media anyway? Is it some sort of web based silverlight client? I'm not too familiar with WHS.

yeh is browser based with silverlight. is good, but is also very limited

i believe native support for flac streaming is not available in WHS2011 (amazingly?!) so if you favour quality audio then avoid (although with some arseing around its possible)

also windwos software raid is not too good and ive read a few bad reports about whs for when it fails and performance related woes too. Also typically windows doesn't play well streaming to linux units and performance is weak there too which might become apparent in every day if you use wireless and of course if you end up running xbmc as an o/s via openelec or xbmcbuntu then you could run into problems.

for home storage and stream id try freenas 7, or 8 if your going for a big setup and dont mind putting the time in. Amahi looks good too as mentioned. alternatively tvmobli is easy to use and works well, it even allows for playback of flac on ps3 as it realtime transcodes your collections to formats that then end device supports, it works on mac,pc or linux

tvmobili looks good, but only 10GB a month streaming :(

true. personally i don't think id reach that amount. but if you do, then its only £20 for your entire life with free updates?

perhaps worth downloading the trial and getting setup? at first it will pull all standard music, documents and pictures into the web interface and then with your sign up you can access it anywhere when you put your password in (ive tried it and its ok but couldnt get FLAC over the external sharing internal was great)

its good ^ because i dont know about anyone else but i get DNLA streaming errors on my PS3 even via lan and they pretty much went away when i installed the service on my pc. you can use a home laptop to play and view music from your local pc. there is a large database of supported devices and its gets updated all the time, so a samsung or sony tv will be able to receive a DNLA stream and even if your file type is not supported it will transcode so they just work without you manually selecting what format to transcode too !

its simple and sweet but only a piece in the puzzle, if you wanted full NAS storage and backup you could mix it with WHS2011 or preferably a linux distro like ubuntu or centos
