Hi Guys,

For some reason we have lost the ability to RDP onto our homeserver. We have run the repair tool and it keeps coming back saying 'the router is not working' and 'port forwarding is not set up' - the router clearly is working as the server can access the internet, we can connect to it internally, and can stream content from it to devices on our network.

Now I have checked the router settings, manually added the ports that the site says it needs, disabled UPnP and re-enabled it. (If i disable it, it tells me that it is disabled, yet the instructions on the site say to do so)

We have a Cisco E4200 router. We have restarted the virgin modem, and our router, with the server off, and am really at a loss.

Any guidance would be really appreciated.

I really don't fancy having to rebuild the server because of this.

Have you checked the ports you have forwarded are actually open? Shields up or portforward.com are both good tools.

I assume your router is handling DHCP and you have setup a static IP for the server. Check you are forwarding to the correct IP.

What about firing up Event Viewer and Services and using them to check that RDP service is started on the server?

I've seen RDP fall over when a dependant service is broken.

Well thanks for you're advice guys - its back up and running. Checked the port forwarding settings and it had been set to TCP instead of both in the router.

Checked the event logs, nothing to indicate that there was an issue with another service related to RDP.

Seems like everything is working now.

Thanks for the help guys, greatly appreciated.

:)

Restoring the C: drive on WHS 2011 is so easy to do and works very well:

Boot from installation media
Select repair
Select target drive to restore
Select back-up, default is latest

Half an hour or so later you should be up an running......simples :D
