Why Ain't My Puter Powering Off Properly?

My old machine (bout 6 years) isn't shutting off properly - it'll power off after i do the Start -> shut down thing, but i've noticed the LEDs/fan is still running. It's not Sleeping, as it won't wake from the keyboard, but will power up again fine and there's nothing obvious in my Events [well, i do have a Type 11 Controller error thingy about "harddisk2", except no hardware is listed as Harddisk2 and it's not happening regularly, or at least it's hadn't happened when i checked last night about this issue].
running 4gb on Win7 64, nothing has been installed etc for over a year, most i've done recently is uninstall/reinstall mice and my Wacom.

TIA

Good points howie - I would also suspect software perhaps not playing nice - it is worth checking drivers - graphics but also any other hardware plugged in like webcams and gaming devices - could be your mouse software, try W7 standard drivers only to test.

Unfortunatly it's a matter of deduction - just change one thing at a time to see if it fixes the problem.

thanks for the replies, but....the other night i ended up long-pushing the case button to power off properly, which killed the fan etc. Last night i powered up, nowt in the Events etc, no issues during use, powered down and it shut down no prob at all :-/
dunno if it was a passing bleb or a precursor of an upcoming fail but i think it's time for a "spec me" thread just to be safe!

cheers anyways.

I think its spelled pooter :) in any case it def not a girls bits.

no idea about the PC. you could try starting in safe mode, and shutting down again, if that works ok probably software issue, worse case reformat it and see if it still does it

no ideas?
:-/

Is it an ASUS motherboard? They have had various problems like this a few times over the years (my Rampage leaves the KB/Mouse lights on after shutdown). If so then try updating the MB BIOS then clearing the CMOS.

Not on the planet which I live on it isn't.

It is, Google it (or watch some American films). I've never actually heard anyone refer to the PC as a puter before (probably for this very reason), people usually just say PC/comp/rig/system/etc.

Anyway. Sounds a bit like a PSU issue but presuumably the fan that keeps running is connected directly to the mobo, not handing off some molex adapter? (then it would not be a PSU issue).
