I've just been outside and opened the bonnett and it says 1.4 FSI on the actual engine if that makes any difference?

Absolutely. According to my dad's Tom Tom, 80mph in the Golf is actually only 74mph. It isn't as unnacurate lower down though. 40mph in the Golf was 39mph GPS.
