I know its a bit of a funny thread title...but after being here for 2 weeks (my 3rd visit) I'm still amazed how friendly and courteous most Americans are.

They aren't afraid to approach you and make conversation, or offer to take pictures, give directions or help you out in some way. It doesn't seem to be limited to age groups either, seen no difference between youth and adults.

I thought I'd bring it up because it makes me wonder how our country must be perceived by the world when they visit, with our growing 'chav' culture and political correctness - we feel so welcome and appreciated when we visit America. One of my teachers did a tour of the Southern States and she mentioned being overwhelmed by small acts of kindness and friendliness from everyone she bumped into.

Anyone care to shed some light on this? Genuinely curious... are they born with good genes or something?

Americans seem to be more positive than we are although they have problems with gangs and the like (worse than we do so I don't really understand the relevance of the 'chav' reference).

speaking without experience, the general portrayed american is a far more sociable person and far more approachable in comparison to the general citizens of the UK who REQUIRE alcohol for such levels of social interaction

just one of those things i guess

They're better people. It's one of the main reasons I'm desperately trying to emigrate to the US.

Where abouts in the US?

I do find North America to generally be a lot friendlier

I have been spending a lot of time in the Southern states recently. I started off with Texas and have been back to New Orleans in Louisiana 3 times in the last 3 months.
Yeah, you get the rednecks but apart from them the people are just amazing. Everytime I return to the UK I'm reminded within seconds of stepping off the plane of how cold the British people are. I hate this place now.

the culture, the way of living etc etc makes us rude to each other when we should be nice.. i know that i get bad looks from people.. im immigrant my self and when i came to this country i was much friendlier person than i am now.. guess US doesn't have this.. never been

It could just be that people moan more in the UK... People from other countries apart from the US seem nice also.

People who I have met from The Netherlands, Greece, Italy, Ukraine, Poland, France and a few countries who's names I forget all seem to be nice too...

What you've described it how the rest of the world acts, other than the UK. Not surprising considering how our sardine tin is constantly filling up more and more each year.

I know the feeling. I'm heading back to the UK on Sat and despite seeing my family am not overly looking forward to it. :(

Is there much demand in the states in air traffic control (I imagine there is). If your serious about it a good immigration company will serve you well. I used one and despite the cost, they were worth their weight in gold.

There's demand but because it's a Federal position, I need to be a naturalized citizen (5 years living there or 3 years if I marry an American) to be able to apply. Canada is much quicker.

I see your loication as Canada so I assume you emigrated? Do you mind if I pick your brains about a few things some time by email or MSN/Yahoo?:)

I moved from the UK to the US 5 yrs ago and I totally agree. The US people are a lot more friendly.. It does also have it's disadvantages, but in general you are MUCH better off over here.

I no longer have to deal with the chav idiots that grace the streets of every English town. Young people here say hello here rather than do their utmost to look menacing. OK not everyone is like that, but i do get the feeling that England has gone down the pan. Shame really as it does have a lot going for it.

The yob culture is much less prevelant over here. It does also have it's bad parts though, but unlike England there are many places in which it's non-existent. In England even the small towns have their fair share of scum wannabe rudeboys.

I hope it one day turns around.

I blame the weather! ;-)

Seriously though there is probably some truth in that - living in a country with good reliable weather is great, because you can & plan do so much more!

I won't say I'll never move back - but I doubt I will. Can't say America takes my fancy though - my experience of Americans in New York was terrible, so rude unless they wanted something from you (like a tip), then they came across as fake. I'm sure that the rest of America & Americans are much better though.

yea went to disneyworld and everyone in orlando were uber friendly.
come back to england and all the shop workers are miserable , it makes you depressed

A lot of it has to do with the ability to hire and fire staff.

In the UK it is very difficult to fire a member of staff.

In the USA most states are "will to work", which means, one can be fired for anything what so ever. Therefore Americans are a lot happier, even if its fake friendlyness, and put in a lot more effort, because they know any slip will result in being replaced. In the UK you can get away with murder as an employee in comparison.

Why are Americans so nice?

Simply, stim packs.

Burgers act like stim packs to them. When they tuck into a big mac haven't you heard them go "Ahhhh that's the stuff"?

"Jacked up and good to go."
