Why are android devs against physical buttons?

They greatly improve usability&productivity imho, plus having the keyboard higher ( on screen buttons) is annoying for people who don't have massive hands like mine.

I've always been using Samsung (S2 for 2 years, then S4 for 2 years), with no complaints, then I went to a Z3 for 4 months, which is now at the insurer for repairs/replacement, now I'm temporarily using a HTC One M7, my dads old phone. Also from work I use an S3 ( usually I used my own private Z3 for work calls too, as I hated carrying more than 2 phones and have unlimited calls anyhow).

Now that I'm using the HTC One, I come to realise, how much I miss the dedicated buttons on bottom: Home, back and taskman/applications. Why do the Android devs insist/recommend placing them on screen ?

It's a waste of valuable screen space, plus it moves the keyboard upwards, which is annoying. The new HTC One lacks these buttons and I personally think that is a mistake.

I'm tempted to just replace the cracked screen myself, perhaps replace the battery while I'm at it, and keep the HTC One M7, as since I updated the software ( dad was running ancient android 4.2 or so) to 5.0 and new HTC Sense, I love it, fair enough I'm not multitasking as much as on my Z3, and I miss the SD slot ( 32gb is to litte space), but overall, this phone is FAR superior to the Z3 for my use, if only it had 3gb of ram, an SD slot, and a newer APU :(.

Before Android I have had an N97, and my dad had a Desire Z around my S2 times, both of these had a physical QWERTY too, I loved both these phones, Symbian was terrible but the physique/body was great. The Desire Z was also awesome, and I find it very unfortunate they never made a new one with better hardware ( cpu&ram).

But, long story short, I got 2 buttons back and got rid of the on-screen buttons on the bottom, and the phone immediately works far more to my liking, why does Google insist for phone makers to remove them ? Luckily there still is Samsung who are dominant enough to keep the buttons and tell Google to FO basically :).

You can please everyone is the simple answer.

Onscreen buttons and tiny bottom bezel is WIN IMO.

Which phone has a tiny bottom bezzle then ? Certainly not Sony's Flagships, Motorolla's Nexus, HTC's flagship, etc...

Just pointless wasted space next to the bottom speakers, perfectly fit for physical or touch buttons to keep more screen space for actual important things, and keeping the kb lower.

Always preferred physical buttons for devices in the 5-7" space though can see why they'd do it on 10+ inch devices.

There are on-screen buttons so Google can control the entire user experience. Also in future updates like there was from Ginger Bread to Ice Cream Sandwich they can update the user experience. So say Google decide to release a 4 buttons navigation bar that would easily be applied to all Google devices.

If this doesn't class as a tiny bottom bezel than I don't know what does.

More then enough space to have 2 buttons there!

That makes sense, but the navigation bar just takes up valuable screen space, pushes the keyboard upwards ( or if you have a auto hidden nav bar, you need an extra action to get it up), and is generally wasting space, like for example on the Z3/5 and the Nexus 6 and the new HTC One, the spacen ear the bottom speakers.

On the Z3, with swiftkey ( I swear by this kb), with the number row enabled, it takes up more than half the screen due to the navigation bar, it's a bit excessive imo ( yes I know I can make swiftkey smaller, but that's not the point).

Cant stand on screen buttons, only phones I have are with proper buttons, I like all my screen space to be used for that not to have buttons pop up and ruin the experience. Who wants an ugly black bar on the bottom of the screen.

Tried phones with on screen ones but its a nasty experience for me.

I miss the 'physical' buttons on my HTC one S- they didn't freeze, they were always in the same place, didnt take up x number of pixels of the screen resolution and never autp hid at an annoying time. For some reason I really struggle to end calls from ablack screen too, which physical buttons were good for.

I'm also in the 'prefer physical buttons' camp. Although it's a lot better now that apps are written to support the handling/hiding of soft buttons compared to a couple of years ago.

Although, having used an iPhone 6 with a physical button for about half a year and cming back to Android I realised how much I missed having a back button, physical or not. Going back on iOS apps is so inconsistent, devs place them in all different places.

I have no issue with the on-screen buttons. For all intents and purposes they look and behave exactly as capacitive physical buttons would, with the benefit of some visual feedback when you press them.

for as long as i can remember i've had to deal with on screen buttons. i never notice it or find it an issue, and now have it an issue when i use friends phones with hard buttons as i can't see which buttons is which. is the back button on the left with the older samsungs, but now the right? and htc which is the back button? is the other button a menu button or a recent apps button?

with on screen it's consistent, and as pointed out earlier, easier to update with just a software update. from 4.4 to 5.0 they changed to a simpler nicer look.

I'm with you OP. Always had a Samsung but now it's all on screen and in the wrong place.... What's it all about??

The back button (on screen or not) should be on the right. Why put it out of reach on the left? Might as well get a iclone

Its not out of reach for me and the keyboard is also fine for me... Perhaps get a smaller phone for smaller hands?

I had Samsung phones for ages and also swore by capacitive buttons thinking they were wasting valuable screen space until I recently got a nexus 5 and changed my mind. Overall user experience is better and for the most part the on screen buttons are a non issue as they are hidden anyway a lot of the time.

Regards to button placement (back button being out of reach on the left) don't most right handed people hold their phone with their left hand anyway?

Yeah I love the physical touch buttons on Samsung's phones. Looking at the 6P, it seems such a waste of screen space having them on the display, especially when they could quite easily be on the bottom bezel...

My android phones have been HTC desire, S1, Xperia play, S2, S3, HTC one m7, z1 compact and now S6 edge and never had this issue :D
