Why are games so boring/similar

The lowest common denominator has been found (or at least game developers believe it be so) and thus every developer is cashing in on this - there is no pointing changing anything if what you have is earning you the cash.

For things to change the public needs to stop buying rehashes. Until they do, nothing will change and we'll continue to see 'AAA' titles for extortionate prices which are nothing more than the previous version with new skins.

As someone pointed out, if you want original thought in your games, checkout the Indie scene. The only problem, and in 2011 it is a problem, the production values and depth perhaps do not and will not match the big spenders in the business.

It is tragic at the moment, as the best creative minds in the business earn peanuts, while the robots at EA etc.... generally speaking, earn millions.

Indie developers program because of their passion for games, and I love this.

No one should ever put down a game in the mainstream that tries something slightly different but maybe not polished(as it takes time to perfect a new genre) as this game could go on to create a genre that gives you a genuine alternative to the recycled stuff we mainly get.

I know it's a console game, but Heavy Rain could actually spark a new and very exciting genre for gaming, which gives people more choice as the big software houses would be forced to change their tactics.

If you haven't played Heavy Rain then you won't know what I mean. LA Noire is coming out in March for the consoles whcih looks like a slightly different type of game from the usual Rockstar stuff. We could be on the edge of a very exciting new genre I hope.

Consoles are leading the way it seems for big budget alternative genres. Indie games are getting much more coverage too, even on consoles. Maybe one will make enough money to make are relatively decent budget mainstream game that gives gamers alternatives too.

We need the real geniuses getting decent budgets instead of the guys that just recycle or slightly change an existing genre.

I mean Super Meatball would have been made on a shoe string, it sold more copies then the game it rivalled, Sonic adventure 1 or something on the 360, this should surely be recognized by the likes of EA, I hope it will, but then again EA have never been pioneers.

Japan seems to be buzzing with ideas too for mainstream games (Shadow of the collosous, ICO, Deadly Premonition and really many more) but some don't get released over here, and they are not exactly PC games first and foremost.

At the moment PCs are in a bit of a rut, I think there are more mainstream new and original games on consoles sadly, this is why I own a 360 too.

I probably repeated myself in this but oh well I just wanted to express my thoughts as I went along.

same as music there's pretty much something for everyone but the top 10 in the chart will be pretty similar.

Super Meat Boy
Plants Vs Zombies
Peggle
Trine
The Ball
Audiosurf
VVVVVV
World of Goo

Don't see a problem with originality myself, think the OP needs to look a bit harder.

Dont forget Braid and Magicka.

People are always going on about 'Indie Games' and how innovative they are... I don't think I've ever managed to finish one (Machinarium excluded) because they're generally forgettable and boring, rehashes of old games but with a new mechanic, or just so badly put together that it's too much work to try to play them.

I don't think games are becoming more boring, there are just too few great titles released each year. In fact, the genre which everyone calls 'oversaturated' (FPS) is the one genre I'm always waiting for new titles from. More arcade-style FPSes would do the trick for me... I'm considering buying Bulletstorm at full price, and I don't do that :D

I've gotta agree with those saying that the OP just needs to look a little deeper. We can look back at a few select titles on the amiga and say how great it was, but the truth is that it was one of the worst platforms for spewing out poor quality repetitive titles day in day out. Yeah there were a number of gems in there, but really it wasn't much different to today's gaming landscape, except that the budgets have gone up dramatically.

Also a bit confused about the citing of starcraft 2 as a rare counter example. It was a very well made game, but it didn't do a single thing that was new or innovative.

Good games dont sell. Bad games do. So everyone is gonna make bad games to get rich.

Thats actually a very easy way of explaining it :p

I agree with you there. I thought SC 2 would do to me what Dune II did all those years ago, sadly it was immensely overrated (like all Blizzard games, hopefully this will change), unoriginal, I can't think of one original idea, this isn't a case of If it isn't broken don't fix it, because I think this genre could do with fresh ideas and unfortunately it was as much an example of recycled trash as most of the EA games, but it had Blizzard on the cover.

No idea why it took them eons to make it.

i think games are just becoming more technical with the showy stuff and gimmicks.
back when visuals/effects were simpler they put more attention to the genre and the way it was going to work. like GTA1>GTA4 anyday of the week!

It's like cars, aircraft, motorbikes etc, they all look the same; everyone copies everything else..especially styling and graphics!

a totally new shooter is a risky venture, you're far safer making a Fallout 4 or a Crysis 2, especially if you rely on investors.

the Sinclair C5 = Clive Barker's Jericho :D:D

A few days ago I installed an Amiga emulator, WinUAE and some ROMs. I owned an Amiga when I was young (almost 20 years ago) had many games and loved playing it for years

I have recently been firing up some games and whilst they look rubbish you get past this after a couple of minutes of playing due to the gameplay being so damned good.

I started playing PP Hammer and before I realised it I was on level 9 and about 3 hours had passed! I dont think ive done this with any PC recently apart from Starcraft 2

I then had a look on the net and found this thread http://www.warblade.as/feature01.html

Many games on the Amiga had brand new styles, Lemmings, Settlers, Rainbow islands, Speedball, Nebulus, Wizzkidd, Theme Park, Another world... The list goes on.

Why does PC gaming seem to 'drab' at the moment, like theres only 3 or 4 genres. FPS, RTS, Driving thats about it really!

Trine is a great game, more should be released like it, or Tron. At least they are a bit different than the usual. Games should be made like were made on the Amiga, or even remakes in HD. How good would HD Desert strike or Robocop be!

Too much choice not enough quality(like DVDs/Movies).

If you find a game you like the look of (sod the reviews or ither peoples opinions) give it a good blast(not just 30mins, 3-4 hours).

if you get hooked then you won't think about the other 120 games you have.

That's when you enjoy games agin, regardless of originallty.

Nothing new under the Sun.

Most of the games people think are original aren't very original, just less frequent. Portal isn't original, its just a type of gameplay(no enemies, logic puzzles) that no ones been interested in for 10 years.

Theres no originality in ANYTHING, take billions of people, give them something new to play with/make/design, wait 10 years, see that theres nothing original being made anymore, thats life.

Books, literature, poetry, theres smeg all original, just new combinations of old idea's, some of these will be interesting, others will be terrible, some will be great but you've read a book thats almost identical so you'll hate it while another person hasn't read that particular book and finds it brilliant.

Portal, it was novel, I liked playing that type of game after so long of not playing a puzzle game, and I enjoyed it, and no, I can't name what games its like, older members surely could, I have a horrific memory for names of games, and infact, my younger life, I have a really strange memory, names of people, doesn't happen, faces, always remember.

I think the people who thought Portal was the most original game ever and the best game they'd played in ages, well a "lot" of them were younger people who started gaming with COD/MOH.

Gameplay, I don't think I've played anything "new" in 20 years, great games, play them all the time, its not about how you play, but why mostly, the story, good story grips you and makes very average or normal gameplay feel fun. Same game with a woeful story can make the same identical gameplay seem boring or, repetitive, or dull.

I mean, books are the same, reading a good book, or a bad book, is still reading, yet the experience can be night and day.

A game doesn't need to be original(and by and large can't be anymore) to be good, its the whole package. Mass Effect 1 had so many irritating things, the slowest lifts in the known universe, yet so far in the future you wonder how thats even possible :p Combat was, average at best, planet side driving, exploring, pretty awful, completely unoriginal.. story, epic, game overall, epic, game of the year, sure, game of the decade, maybe.
