Why are Netgear routers so damn rubbish??

I had a Netgear DG834G (v3) running for a few years, used it because it held sync on a long line rather well (recently replaced with Linksys AM200/WRT54GL), it still works fine and keep it for a backup router...

Another DG834GT user. The only issue I have ever had is when I accidentally covered the router and it overheated. Hasn't missed a beat since.

Had a DGN2000. Had a few problems with it, it got really hot then the LAN ports on it started to die one by one. Just picked a DG834GT off the bay for just over a tenner. Think I'll get a gigabit switch to boost my LAN that little bit further.

Thats exactly whats happening with mine....already lost the connection 5 times in the past 10 mins....i have another router/modem coming tommorrow but geez why do netgear make such shoddy hardware??.

They're not, IME, significantly worse than any of the other consumer brands. It's what you get when you want to pack a load of features into a small box and all at a low low price.

ROFL @ BILLION! hahahahaha, come on... you gotta be kidding?

If you want anything more than a Netgear get yourself a Linksys or a Dlink, if you want more then the ONLY option is Draytek, the likes of the 2820n.

Billion is about as much use as a chocolate fire guard.

Though I'll add my name to the list of people that'll never touch Belkin again.

Same here as I got a belkin router a while ago and it started dropping LAN connections a few months after I got it (fixed after updating the firmware whilst calling their god awful Indian based call centre) then it started giving out completely over a year ago with DNS issues (found to be caused by the router since I plugged my computer directly into the modem) so I dumped it and got a netgear router and that has been going for almost a year now with no problems whatsoever.

No idea why some people here have a downer on Billion? They seem to be on a similar level to Draytek in terms of features, target market and reviews. Both Taiwanese based, yet Draytek are more trusted here because they spend more on marketing and have a bigger UK presence, where Billion do the same elsewhere (massive in Aus). Not saying they are fabulous but I'd love to hear some real experiences rather than pointless cheap insults.

Draytek hardware, features and firmware are excellent, but beware their tech support if you need individual help. Can't think of any other popular router company that charges premium rate for its tech support line.

+1 to avoid Belkin. You'll be lucky if you get 1 updated firmware before they drop your model and focus on a newer one. They have no clue about their own products and you have my sympathy if you've ever tried to communicate with their Indian call centre.

If you don't need premium features then stick with Netgear. As others have said, they aren't perfect but they are still one of the better choices within the consumer space.

I totally agree, Billion are good routers, which is why I'm interested in the opinions of those who are slating them.

Billion, where to start:
Pre 2009 was the same as eTec - eTec was the fail of failboats, with their poor GUI and very temperamental power boards which were prone to overheating, in early 2008 there was a court case which they lost, allong the lines of, the modem got so hot it melted the paint on a window sill and stained a £33,000 painting which had to be paid out in late 2009, at that point Edimax bought Billion and they then Slightly improved, the WiFi Range was poorer than poor, the early Billion had issues with Throughput and dropping packets.

All that said, the models for 2010 have greatly improved, Yes, BUT... Far from in the same league as the likes Linksys never mind Draytek.

Having installed over 200 Billion and way over 300 Netgears (in previous employment) i found myself returning to the clients with the Billons with a replacement after a while, for reasons you could only laugh at.
