Why are people so defensive about Nest?

why would they want to? and who would want to watch it anyway

I guess you stop them in the same way you'd stop someone taking your photo with a phone camera
Taking out a camera/phone and photographing someone is a different prospect than simply walking past someone and their glasses recording things.

Think about it this way

The government gets a tip off that their is a terrorist planning a bomb attack in London. They activate the location services of every google glass wearer in London.

Instantly they have thousands of cctv cameras
And the fact that this could be possible in the hands of a private enterprised doesn't at least make you consider that it could be open to abuse?

I'd say the person with the camera is worse than the google glass wearer
So?

You can already get glasses with small pin hole cameras. If someone wants to walk down the street and record people they already can.

Again, it's a somewhat different situation to getting equipment intended for clandestine recording so you can record people than it is to google glasses.

What does that matter? I'd feel quite loved if someone really wanted to create a shrine of pictures/videos of me.

It's not like you berate someone when you catch them looking at you on the train etc...! "Don't you dare look at me in public!!!!" lol.

oh you'd be surprised at the amount of teenagers, and unfortunately those a little older who have that attitude.

I'm the opposite, if you aren't looking at me I'd get upset lol

I think what is people are concerned about is benig monitored by those appliances so that google can better sell advertising or something like that.

Google scanning your fridge and suggesting items in your email based on that etc.

Not my concern, just explaining what i think people might be concern about.

but that's a good thing? if I get an email telling me to buy my milk from asdas rather than sainsburys as its cheaper, what's the problem?

I'd like one, purely because it gives me more functionality than my current thermostat.

I really don't care that Google know it's 18C in my living room and 22C in my kitchen :p

Yes i agree it is all a matter of perspective. If someone wants their fridge scanned and their eating and movement in their house tracked so that they can benefit from that service then they can go ahead and enable that functionality.

I don't have any problem with google buying home automation company. I would like to automate my house but i wouldn't want to connect it to my online google profile. I would create a separate google account for my house.

But it does play in to peoples fear of the all seeing and all knowing "skynet". Soon if you do someting wrong you won't be able to even get in to your house because the police will via google using your home automation block your out of your own house because you didnt pay traffic ticket etc. These are things that may happen in the future.

absolute rubbish, that's hollywood movie talk

honestly, the majority of people are boring. Those who aren't, the rapists, the pedos are the ones I WANT the police locking out of their house.

I'm a big believer in big brother. You do something wrong, and I want you caught. Nobody is really scared of anything these days, everyone think they can get away with anything.
Hopefully with technology people will behave themselves.

People aren't going to guantanamo bay for doing 40 in a 30 - but that drunk teenager high on drugs who's just run over and killed your daughter. Yep, his car has sent an automatic feed back to the police and is in the process of being caught.

I'm not so sure it is really. You will appear in plenty of pictures every time you go out. Either through CCTV or someone taking a holiday snap.

I'd be all for a set of rules that everyone including the government, government departments and police have to abide by. But as it is it appears there are no limits to what a company can collect so why not enjoy the benefits of their products?

Do you have a Tesco clubcard or similar? Then Tesco have a profile of your shopping habits and target promotions to get you to buy other similar products.

Like I said, I'd like to be able to make that choice. Just because it happens doesn't mean I have to like it!

People are forgetting one simple thing.

You don't have to use Google and you don't have to use their products. Google privacy problem solved.

I think the chap above made a good point. Whilst he might not be using a google product, someone might be recoding him with say google glass

or if he buys something on his credit card, his name off the card might be sent to them with the products he's just bought, which in turn spams him for stuff
