Why are people so dumb...

[..]
Bit of a rant there but I suppose my point is, is anyone concerned by how gullible and stupid people are these days? [..]

I disagree with "these days". All that's changed recently is how easily and quickly untruths can spread. People have been commenting on it for at least centuries and probably longer. “A lie will go round the world while truth is pulling its boots on.” is a very old phrase.

I see this in the office where people read guff in the Fail or the red tops and off they go ranting. Or watch garbage like Benefits street and declare this is how the world works

I had the strange experience today of explaining to an coworker that Benefits Street is deliberately skewed to the point of essentially being fake. She was pretty angry about how people on benefits have it so easy, etc, etc. What made the experience strange is that she's on benefits.

One of the reasons I left FB. So much misinformation sharing. People will believe something so easily because someone's made an infographic of it.

I think the best example is the successful campaigns to get people to petition to have water banned.

Nothing to do with FB but my eldest daughter joined the world of the dumb last night.
She was talking about when she goes abroad how she navigates back to base. She says she takes photos of street names and landmarks and then uses them to get back to the hotel.
She has an iPhone so I'll let you to work that one out.

I've completed 8 full marathons & countless half marathons and over the years she's seen me giving advice to other people about running and especially running shoes but yesterday she also confessed to going to Sports Direct for running shoes :(
She did talk to their 'expert' though :)

Well the average IQ is 100.... and 50% of people are BELOW this number, so that will give you an idea of why so many people are completely stupid.

Human nature and I'll grantee you will do it as well. We can't screen all information we gather. People have interests in different areas, so they'll likely check those areas, but you won't do it for everything. Other areas you heat it enough with nothing to counter it, you'll almost certainly will parrot it out. This happens all the tome and not just from media, how many work stories have little if any bases in reality. And yet we all parrot it out.
Then as soon as you are challenged you realise how dumb the thing you said was.

I like your signature.

i love people that don't get the IQ joke. Keep me smiling and killing fish.

sorry not joke, anecdote would be better.

IQ isn't really an indication of intelligence, so it's useless to use as a metric like that.

Well it is the specified way of measuring intelligence, so I would say that it is a useful way of measuring peoples intelligence, eg. low IQ = likely to have low intelligence in other things as well. That is how it is measured. People who say it is not a good metric is probably because they scored badly on IQ test. Not saying IQ is the definitive measure of intelligence, but its the standard way of measuring it and gives a decent indication of whether you are a bit dense or not.
