Why are people so plate/age obsessed?

So i go and check out my mums new possible purchase with her (60 reg 1.2S polo) and she goes to me "why don't you think of changing your old 06 plate (320D SE) to something new like this?" She did'nt even want to hear of getting a slightly older but cheaper car..

Did you point out to her that your car is still the latest generation of 3 series and that there is no point in getting a new one until 2012 and the F30?

Tell her not to get a 1.2 polo... Woefully underpowered doesn't even cover it.

Tell me about it, my mum has got one to replace her Yaris because apparently the Polo was "car of the year" ... which is great, but it sure as hell wasn't the car of the year with that uber low power engine in it.

I don't like the sound of the 3cyl much either

Does she know that the 11 plates are out now and her new car will therefore be old because a number on the plate is different?

Mine is 39 plate, beat that!

Same reason why women buy sports cars when they generally have absolutely no interest in driving :D (/jk?)

To project a sense of wealth and superiority. Basic human psychology.

On the reverse side many people buy private plates to hide the age of their car which is a similar sort of thing.

I can't stand people who think car's will spontaneously explode after they become 3 years old, I know a lot of people will take their cars out over 3 years finance/lease and just jack it in rather than paying the final payment for the car, and end up getting a new one. But there's still plenty of time left in a 3 year old car before a massive repair bill ever rears its ugly head.

there are a load of boggo new 320d's in my office car park as company cars. They're a horrible place to be, even compared to my aging E46. newer doesnt have to equal better

Surely you should compare like with like? You have an E46 330Ci, right?

I can assure you an E92 330i M Sport is not a horrible place to be - it's superior to the E46, for sure. As you'd expect given its newer.

He is comparong like-for-like in terms of price rather than model. That's the point of the thread, another "old cars are cheaper than new cars so you get more for your money" regurgitation...

what i was getting at is more that very old can still be better than new. FWIW, a mate has a 335i, and it is *lush*

really though it was more intended as a comment on the foulness of basic E9x 3's - but then that's somewhat moot as all low spec BMWs are pointless.
