Why are swearing initialisms allowed?

Just wondering, we can say 'ffs' and other things that blatantly stand for the f bomb, but not * off as it's not fully starring out a sweary. * off could mean foxtrot off.

Sad times :'(

Some funny exceptions on this forum as to what words are disallowed. I've noticed two words recently which automatically get starred out if you use them, which seem ridiculous to me.

Using the alphabet as a number reference, A=1 and Z=26, the two words I'm talking about are:

4,9,12,4,15 and 19,12,1,7

Both of the above words can be used in a perfectly innocent sentence and yet they are banned.

I've always been a bit confused with the swear filter on here too.

To me, bloody hell, crap and sod off have always been swear words. The way I was brought up i.e. no pocket money if I was caught saying those words as a child.

4,9,12,4,15 and 19,12,1,7

Yeah, I agree they're not swear words. One's a sex toy and the other is a bit of mild name-calling, like calling someone an idiot but it's deffo not swearing. Same with another word that rhymes with brick, stuff you'd hear in the playground or on the school bus and that gets starred out too. What will get starred out next? Moron? Rampant rabbit? :D

You can use any word on the forum as long as it's in an appropriate way.

Off the top of my head I can't think of a safe use for the first one assuming the obvious isn't allowed.

Slag is the glass-like by-product left over after a desired metal has been separated from its raw ore.

Well we are all mostly adults here, so If I am having an innocent discussion about sex with another forum member then I should be able to say the first one.

I notice you had to use a bit of trickery to post the second one. If we were having a conversation about metallurgy then the second one would be starred out by default when used, which is daft in my opinion.

****'s also a by product of MMA welding.

It's a dumb word filter and takes no account of context.

Certain words with more than one meaning are blocked to avoid them being used in an inappropriate way.

If you really need to use a word then you can with a bit of trickery.

This isn't just any forum though, it play a huge part in a very successful business so certain niceties have to be obeyed otherwise it would drive away potential custom.

I run a moderately successful forum where there are no rules per se, I would only kick someone out who truly deserves it. But we tolerate NSFW posts, all swearing, petty squabbles, etc. Sure we lose some people in a hissy fit but we gain more than we lose. Some donate to the running of the server but its not a business.

Its not Nazi moderation on here, just doing whats necessary to keep everything running nicely.

The moderators do a great job and the filters I think are spot on.

I agree that it's not 'Nazi moderation', nobody in this thread even implied that, so you can have that concession for free.

I also agree that the moderators do a great job, rare exceptions to the contrary accepted of course.

I do not agree that the filters are 'spot on', for reasons already outlined in previous posts.
