why are the new intel core 2 duo processors so good?

quite so. i got myself a 486DX for 10p and made a keyring out of it :D if you did that back in 1994 people would be like OMG

* stares at keyring* sry its a 486FX. sounds better too

I`m pleased this has cropped up,because i`m a relative noob :D ,ok,i have a p4 3.4 Ghz, which of these new conroes compares to that in performance terms, gaming ect.Sorry if it`s a really stupid noob question. But if you don`t ask,how can you know

None of them as even the E6300 is faster.

Yeah and you can pick up an old Pentium 3 from your local paper for a tenner... it's just not comparable!

But what game won't run on an overclocked A64 running at say 2.8GHz? - None.

Maybe you need me to say it a third time.
If you have the cash then core 2 duo is what you should go for.
If funds are very limited, there are cheaper options that will suffice.

It depends what you need it for - buy the cheapest thing that'll do the job, anything else is daft. For many, myself included, "the job" is the most cost effective performance (as I do lots of processor intensive stuff like encoding and I want it done as fast as possible for the least money).
