Why are there no Petrols about?

Even finding big engined diesels on large cars is getting harder.
Very true.

Thankfully (for LHD markets) in Germany, people are still buying if petrols but it's still something like 5 per 100 diesels.

Just searched for BMW 3,4,5,6,7 Series 2013- for sale in Germany.
11,090 diesel and 1,788 petrol :(

In many parts of Europe diesel is the significantly cheaper fuel and you get better economy so why wouldn't you. The refinement of most new diesels is up there with petrols too, plus with EU noise restrictions you can no longer hear the engine, so for a lot of people the cheaper engine under the bonnet is the diesel hence the lack of petrols. What is the benefit of a petrol these days, the drive for efficiency has led to petrols that are no longer revvy, turbocharged so lack a good engine note and response, short powerbands and short gearing, very diesel like, you may as well have a diesel. Only in very highend motors do good petrols exist.

If you want a nice petrol get out and buy a new one, then you can have what ever you want but most won't because when it comes to spending your hard earned you look at cost of ownership and downscale ambitions.

Diesel can do one. Tractor engines. Even the most refined, top marque diesels sound like tractors after a while.

No thanks, I enjoy going beyond 5k RPM :)

I drive a car fitted with arguably one of the best diesel engines on the market, the BMW N57D30 and trust me, at times you can very much hear the engine and its very obviously a diesel.

Sadly even youngsters learn from their parents that they're better. I think only petrol heads actually know the true problems of diesel. I've had people tell me diesel are more reliable, better to drive etc.

Well this is from a company that makes their petrols sound like a diesel, like the nice clattery M5 my colleague has, when he started it up next to me in the car park, I was shocked, thought he had badged up a 2 litre diesel :)

Diesels are easier to drive in that you have decent torque at a low rev range. This is something that's useful for people that don't fully understand why they are changing gear.

Essentially the UK has become a service orientated country. We don't make things anymore so when our own items go wrong there isn't the slightest inclination to try and figure it out ourselves. Instead we spend our money on those service products and pay someone else to make it work again. This means people my age haven't got a clue how anything works and so can't make informed choices when it comes to our purchases. It's the same reason (coupled with a lack of personal savings) that PCP and a 3 year cycle has sky rocketed in the past 5 years. It does mean the used car market is on the verge of collapse though and real prices will come down in the next year or two.

99% of people on this planet are just sheep that follow what everyone else does and believe what they are told. The government are putting everyone's health at risk feeding us with wrong info.
Take an old retired guy who lives on my street for example. He has driven petrol's his entire life and here he is about 70 goes out twice a week to the local shops just bought a new Volvo and what does he come back in? A diesel v40 I don't get why the dealerships are just pushing every customer into thinking the diesels are faster and better with inflated mpg etc.

The only variant u could guarantee people would still by in petrol form is hot hatches and now even they are dwindling as we have a diesel ST Focus out and the GTD Golf. I can't remember the last time I seen a new GTI it's always GTD. then u get idiots arguing there faster because of all the tractor engined Torque:o
And don't get me started on every naff new diesel that seems to have twin exhausts despite the fact they have something like 140bhp.
If I had a pound for how many people think my ST220 is a diesel just because it's a Mondeo I would be able to buy a new car :D

To be fair the ST220 is easy to mistake for the diesel ST unless you look at the badge
