Why arent I falling for fallout?

I do like the way that the fans of fallout 3 say you need to keep playing it to like it, that is not the mark of a good game.

A good game should involve you from the start and keep you going all the way through.

If you do anything for long enough you get used to it, doesn't mean that its good, just that you've accepted it for what it is :)

The biggest and most serious criticism I have about Fallout 3, is that the beginning while you're in the vault is boring as hell, and even Megathon is a bit lifeless, with not many interesting people. What made this a great experience for me was the ability to play the game and be whatever you wanted to be, total open world.

Also, the VAT system I loved, but some people didn't I appreciate that.

Don't get me wrong this game isn't perfect, in my opinion Baldurs Gate 2 is far superior!

Not true really, even though i'v loved fallout 3 since the first moment i played it. but there are a lot of games i didnt give the light of day only to come to love a year down the line.

Heavenly sword was one

Mount and blade was another and a lot more.

No one should feel the need to defend it :D

People are just different, no way to force yourself to like it. Some people like shiny colourful worlds with lots of pretty animations with elves and pixies and lots of stardust floating around.

Personally i prefer post apocalyptic games over fantasy games, so thats probably the clincher.

Not really

I wasn't a big fan of STALKER at the start but that was a superb game

I've heard that before so I bought 2 of them, can't remember which ones. The one I tried was supposedly the best of the 3? It had a sort of Operation Flashpoint feel to it, with the loneliness and scope of Fallout 3.

Will give it a go for sure after I've decided which of the 48 Steam games I'm never going to play!

New Vegas starts worse than FO3 IMO so I would definitely push ahead with FO3 if you are going to give it another go. My recommendation is to just go around talking to everyone and start picking up assorted quest lines, then you can pick and choose which ones are most interesting to you. Then again while pursuing those quests make sure you get sidetracked and start finding new locations, new NPCs, and racking up more stuff in your quest log. One of the great things about these games is that you can jump around between quests and just ignore stuff for a while if it doesn't pique your interest.

Also it's easy to get bogged down with looting so a good policy to have is to only pick upitems with a given value:weight ratio (20:1 is what I normally go for) unless you particularly want them for something other than trading. That way you aren't constantly having to travel back to town.

I really can't decide if I love or hate it, I played it first time, mostly just the main story line, I didn't intend to do that, I just didn't really find much traveling between main storyline stuff, and I always thought of missions/map points I got hints to go to, that I'd go past that at some point in the story and simply never did.

90% of the locations are utterly worthless, offering nothing but ammo/cash that you don't in any way require.

LIkewise enemies not scaling with you is rubbish, if you have all the addon's, after hitting around lvl 25, there will basically be one of the uber high level versions of scorpions or super mutants the majority of places you go, its either guys you can barely kill maxed out, or guys you can one shot with basically any gun in VATS.

Also being a FPS type guy I basically refused to use VATS the first time through and it was needlessly difficult, VATS is basically not an option, especially early on, and with VATS its painfully overpowered making almost everyone ridiculously easy to kill.

Anyway, second play through, I used VATS, did literally everything, and completely regretted it, took ages, did all the DLC< was vastly overpowered and hit lvl 30 with probably 30% of the game done, as said most stuff is so boring but you really don't know which locations will be interesting till you've tried them, which I found VERY irritating.

I think thats the biggest flaw with the game, if you stick with the main story line alone you miss 90% of the content, if you randomly search for the other 25% of worthwhile content, it will take you weeks and be boring.

What I felt after both playthroughs was the main story needed to be MUCH longer and take you basically through all the main locations with bigger quests and towns, while leaving out most of the "filler" rubbish area's theres really no need to go to.

The scale of the game is fantastic, the world, while animation sucked, was brilliantly atmospheric, the city area is well built and lots of indoor area's were great, though some are too vast/long/boring with little reason for being.

New Vegas I can't get into at all, the start is awful, the story, the area, the "tutorial" and the dialogue is several magnitudes worse than Fallout 3.

im shocked i thought i was the only one who didnt understand what people saw in this game. I mean i loved oblivion and still play it on and off but i played a few hours of this game and just got bored. Dont think im really into the post-apocalypse games, i did love maelstrom which i doubt theres many people who did ha.

I like to think I have a good taste in games, when it comes to Rpgs I've loved Planescape, Final Fantasy, Mass Effect, Dragon Age, The Witcher and many more...

I just wonder if it's mutually exclusive. Seems to be for me at least.

Meaning that those games you mention above aren't interesting to me at all. Played 'em, giving 'em a fair chance for quite a number of hours each, but could never see the attraction.

Whereas I find Oblivion, Fallout 3, and Fallout NV to be great games. In fact they're in my favourite top ten games ever, on any system.

People are just different, I suppose.

I've played a few hours of it. I was ok but it just didn't grab me and and scream "I'M AWESOME, LOVE ME!" the way Mass Effect did. So I never really felt the urge to put that much effort into it.

I wandered around megaton, walked to rivet city and after about 100 atempts killed all the bandits on the bridge to get the flamethrower, but thats about it.

Funnily enough I loved Oblivion, and have over 90 hours logged on that.

To be honest with the list of game I've got to play I don't know if I'll ever make any more than a token gesture at getting back into it.

My to play list is this:

Finish of DO:Awakening
Lair of the Shadow Broker DLC for ME2
Then it's going to be
BG1&2 or Fallout 1&2 (not sure which one first)
WoW Catalysm is on the list aswell and will be played when from 07/12.
The Witcher
Crysis.

But I'm guessing by the time I've got either BG or FO finished DA 2 will be out and that'll need playing.
