Why aren't speed limits set at the 85th percentile any more..

Doing 120+ MPH throughout a journey is reckless and dangerous in my opinion and I am glad we don't have that here in the UK!

Have the autobahns changed then? It used to be that the "any speed" bits only applied to 3-lane sections, and all the 2-lane bits had 150kph limits (or lower).

That said, yes, the danger in the unrestricted bits lies in the speed difference between lane 2 (usually about 80mph) and lane 3 (anything goes). You can legitimately look in your mirror, see an empty road for half a mile back, pull out, and find a Porsche stuck to your back bumper flashing its lights.

No its always been like that, most of it is 2 lanes and not restricted.

Same stance from me, I drive to the conditions and my ability, so whatever speed that is so be it.

If I so happen to be speeding and get caught, so be it, my fault and so be it. I've never had an accident related to speed on the road and I don't intend on doing so, just drive safe and to both your own and the vehicle limits, not beyond. :)

I tend to do this also.

I worry about getting stopped, I ask myself would I just lie and say "yes officer, I'm so sorry, you're right speed kills, I won't do it again" or just be honest with him "sorry mate but the limits are a load of rubbish, I don't agree with a lot of them and I won't be changing my driving style, just give me my ticket so I can be on my way".

I mean I expect the second to result in a lot more aggro but I also don't really want to lie to a law enforcement officer.

Definitely say the first one. It's all very well sticking to your principals, but I'd much rather have a few minutes of patronising talk and a clean licence, than no patronising talk but points, higher insurance, speed awareness courses etc.

Is the first really likely to see me let off though?

It would be interesting to see how the Autobahn model worked over hear, to see if people would still sit in the outside lane. After 3 years of driving through Germany, I found their motorway manner to be amazing, sticking to speed limits that were imposed, or moving to the appropriate lane when able to.
I also like the fact they have raining speed limits for most of the autobahn too.

Always found the Autobahn a much more pleasant drive, and european motorways in general. It was always coming off the train/ferry the other side and hitting UK congestion pretty much the entirety of the way home.

It's worked for me several times - I've got a clean licence and I can think of two occasions where I'd have lost it for quite a while if I'd just asked the officer for a ticket an went on my way.

DO you know what speed you were going there Son..

Why, 70 officer.......

Never incriminate yourself as they may not actually have anything on you?

A slightly different thought for you guys.

Just imagine we could actually convince all drivers to keep to the existing speed limits. How many months before the speed cameras would be disabled due to lack of funding?

This is what really gets me. Most drivers I see breaking the limit do it by enough to get nicked, but not enough to make a significant difference to actual travel times.

In short the average pleb motorist is funding the running of a camera network that has destroyed the occasional genuine bout of fun on our roads. Annoys the hell out of me.

Interesting read.

I can certainly agree with the statement where driving to a very low limit (40 on a previously NSL road) just makes me switch off and daydream along

Took a trip back to Cornwall over xmas, one route used to go

60-30-40-30-60-40-60-60

Now it goes

60-30-30-30-60-30-30-60

The journey takes massively longer and doing 30 down a completely open high visibility straight piece of road feels plain ridiculous. I'm not sure why the change but it just extends an already mind numbingly boring journey by quite a margin.

Most speeding I see is where the speed limit is too low for the road. Having faster flowing traffic on these roads does improve journey times. A sustained 40 is far better than someone dawdling along at 28/29mph. How often do you see some drivers pass through cameras very cautiously at low speeds causing you to shift down?

In towns/cities where traffic and lights break up driving I don't generally see any speeding unless the roads are clear (late night or early morning). Again in this scenario journey times are improved, especially as all the crossings are generally empty.

Lucky you, thats not what I see.
Most of my drives covering say 30 and 40mph sections will include at least one muppet who'll drive at 35mph through both sections. Drives me nuts, as said driver is likely to be one of the people who is helping to fund the speed cameras that has screwed over driving for fun.

Very interesting read, the bits about nodding off / losing concentration really are true - i suffer from these moments a lot. Yes, people doing 40 in what used to be a 60 is also a problem - people will try and over take in rages against the 'holier than thou' drivers that have no idea what driving to the conditions means - theyre just drones willing to follow what the govt thinks is correct.. Hmmm.

Not necessarily. He might be an "Old Skool" Copper.

I have a couple of stories as an example but the speed related one is too long so here is the "Red Light" one.

Whilst travelling (in an artic) up the A46 towards Coventry at about 01:30-ish I hit the slip for the A45 at 56mph (max limited speed) and only dropped to 50 mph as I knew the lights at the roundabout would change as I went through them and I could see nothing was approaching from the right anyway. In my mirrors in the distance was a cars headlights about to join the same slip.

Sod it.. I kept going....Whooooosh.

As I drove round the roundabout (obviously slowing) I got better vision behind and......

It Wuzza Copper !!

Doh!

He followed me whilst I then drove as Captain Sensible and pulled me just before the airport roundabout.

"You know why I've stopped you don't you drive" ?

"Yup"

"For what it's worth I agree those lights should be part-time but I'm a Copper so I have to do my job - Licence... Ooh.. it's clean"

[me] "Was" !!

"Ok.. Take this as a Rollocking - Check your bloody mirrors better next time" !!

[me]

(Exasperated) "You letting me go (disbelief)"

"Yup - That's held you up long enough to make skipping those lights a waste of your time - Sod off" !!

True Story Bro !!

I bet the 30 section shouldn't be 30.

Bottom line is 70mph is 70 feet a second.
150mph is 150 feet a second.
In that second someone's pulled out in front of you or performed a championship winning butt head maneuver......
Having been a passenger exclusively the last few years I've witnessed the most Appaling driving in all conditions on all types of roads, the limits aren't there to irritate in most cases but to protect all Road users from the idiots(I included myself here historically speaking) who don't know car control and there limits. Maybe contentious but I can see limits and enforcement becoming only more draconian here.

If that really were the case then it's not rocket science to work out that educating the masses instead ruling the masses would work better.
Fix the problem instead of finding a solution!!!!

Or they are just trying to keep us dumb
