Why can I not display AA over x8 on my 4870?

I recently purchased a 4870. Admittedly i havn't played many games on it yet but I have played Hellgate: London and done some FurMark stability tests.

I have Hellgate on full settings including DX10 however I can only set my AA on to 'Medium' (no higher options appear) whereas my brother with a similar setup and a 8800GTX can set his AA to 'Very High'

Also on Furmark when I do a stability test I can only set the AA to X8 whereas my brother can set his GTX to X32.

I am running on ATI's 8.6 drivers.

Any help?

Thanks.

afaik ati only have 8xAA max, but you can enable AA shader filters in CCC which give you upto 24xAA.

if you click anti-aliasing in CCC advanced then you have a drop down box to select which filter you want.

box filter gives you 2x, 4x and 8x AA
narrow tent gives you 4x, 6x and 12x AA
wide tent gives you 6x, 8x and 16x AA
edge detect gives you 12x and 24x AA

untick "use application settings" and experiment with the slider and different filters to see the resulting AA mode, edge detect only works with 4x and 8x AA.

once your happy tick "use application settings" again and select the filter you want to use and then adjust your AA ingame, eg: setting 4x AA ingame using the edge detect filter in CCC will give you 12xAA, using wide tent will give you 8xAA, narrow tent 6xAA etc etc.

hope that helps ;)

Thats interesting I could only go medium on my 9800GTX and 8800 GTX.

Can you tell a difference between 8X and above? I would struggle to tell a difference especially in game.
