Why Can't I hit FSB 400?

I constantly see people talking about FSB400-450, my bios allows upto 550, yet I can't seem to get it anywhere close?

I've given the CPU more vcore right up to 1.5v and then it only just posts but fails loading windows with BSD.

I have a feeling that to get it stable on that kind of FSB I would have to put vcore 1.6v and from what I see that seems ridiculously high, i'd fry the poor thing wouldn't I?

Is it my Mobo, I'm assuming it can't be my memory as I have decent Team Extreeme PC6400 CAS 3-3-3-8.

Something doesn'ty like 400FSB I've even dropped the multiplier down to 6 just to see if it would boot but nope same problem BSD.

What's stopping me get this coverted 400FSB? and why does my chip seem to need so much juice just to POST with that FSB? even on a low multiplier

thanks 1DMF

you have to mess about with other options
and 1.6 is way to high

i have 425 fsb on my p5w64 board 1.1 with memory
same board as yours roughly only using 1.35 upto 3.4ghz
it will do upto 3.2 using lowest vcore setting in bios.

your board overvolts 0.05 as does mine that would mean your giving it more than 1.7 volts

1.28 volts is actually 1.35, 5 notches up from your your orginal
setting in bios.

FSB 1.4 VOLTS
MCH 1.6VOLTS
ICH i set this to 1.2volts

and that will do 425 fsb no problem

MCH 1.6VOLTS
ICH i set this to 1.2volts

ahh is it because I haven't changed these settings - didn't know what they were so left them!

so it's not the vcore that is the problem, what are those other settings is the chipset?, annyway i'll have a play and see how I get on, i've set the vcore to 1.4 at the moment, i'll drop to 1.35 and try the other settings.

thanks 1DMF

no good i'm afraid, will not boot no matter what.

vcore : 1.4v
RAM : 2.3v
FSB : 1.4v
MCH : 1.6v
ICH : 1.2v

I've even tried 7,8,9 multiplyer on fsb400 and changed memory to 5-5-5-15/18 the highest FSB I can get is 370 it posts then just re-boots itself as winodws starts to load.

I've even set the memory to PC6400 doesn't matter what I try it will not boot past 350FSB.

Any other suggestions?

ill show you pics how to set over 400 fsb
look in the ***Official Asus P5WDG2 WS PRO & P5W64 WS PRO Thread***
since its motherboard related

Also remember overclocking is not guaranteed, your board/cpu/memory may not clock as high as others even with the exact same spec as you.

yeah i'm beggining to think it's just my luck to get expensive value components that only like stock value settings!!

I guess I can't grumble @ 3.33ghz and 1000mhz memory CAS 4-4-4-8 , seings as I bought a 2.66ghz and 800mhz memory :D

Have a look Here (Asus p5wdg2 ws pro Bios basic setup idea - Thread, also look in n00bs Classroom Forum) and Here

This is where I got all the info required to O/C mine. :)

Well none of it works for me , it will not do FSB400 and I've followed all the settings to the letter.

do you think I have a duff component, what BIOS are you using? i'm on the latest 0507.

I notice those that are hitting 400FSB are using E6600 NOT E6700 could this be a factor?

Your best of in the official thread for this. Shouldnt make any difference running 6700 over 6600. First off try 0005 bios - its by far the best bios ive tested and the bios makes a big difference.
Also run memory 1:1 and that reduces strain on board - put chipset (mch) up to 1.7 or 1.8v and see what happens then. Have you followed the bios setup right by disabling nearly all the cpu settings (see official thread for list)

yup tried all that 1:1 (ie 800mhz) - 1.7v MCH - disabled everything, set all other settings - nothing!

starting to get bored with 3 days of booting my machine

Its possible you have been unlucky with your board or it could be your cpu doesnt like high fsb. Have you tried 0005 bios?

so you think it's the CPU or Board ? thing is I am getting Overclocking boot errors when i'm not OC'ing accept set the CAS 3-3-3-8 manually, I checked the SPD and they show 400mhz as 4-3-4-9 ?

I've not tried 005 because I don't have a floppy drive and you can only downgrade your bios from DOS.

I've decided to RMA the RAM and get Cellshock PC8000 instead @ the end of the day they don't run 1:1 stock nor properly 800mhz CAS 3-3-3-8 when FSB is @ stock something is a miss, and seings as other PC6400 is cas 4-4-4-12 I might as well get PC8000 4-4-4-12 not only that they are cheaper than the Team , so hopefully I can't loose! , well watch this space , figers crossed - lol

Have you tried enabling 'configure dram timing by spd'? You'll obviously lose your tight timings but mine won't even post past about 380fsb without it enabled. I read when I was looking for a solution elsewhere that it seems to be quite common on the P5WDG2.

You could well just be unlucky with a component - I've got the same board as you, the Geil PC6400 and an E6600, all bought with the intention of 400fsb but I can't even get close to it with anything appraoching stability. To be honest though I'm quite happy at 356 with the RAM at 890, I doubt I'd see much practical improvement at 400fsb in general use.. Maybe I will when more programs and games are made to really take advantage of those types of chips, right now I'm not sure I've got anything at all that's using both cores.

sure have, the thing that bugs me is the SPD shows 3-4-3-9 and these are meant to be 3-3-3-8 , but if you have the same board and can't do it then it's not a dead cert as some seem to think hitting FSB 400 with this board.

However you say anywhere near stability, I can't even POST.

I exit the bios and just watch a black blank screen till I decide it ain t booting and have to hold the power button in till it turns off! , are you at least posting with FSB400?

With manual RAM timings I just get the black screen, fans whirring with no POST. With the automatic ones it'll conk out before getting to Windows unless I use a silly vCore.

I've just read a few posts on here about the P5B boards having a problem with Geil RAM so that's probably my culprit.. Pity I didn't know about it before I bought the stuff though.

had the same problem with geil on my p5w64 ws
replaced with cellshock no looking back.
