Why can't some people talk properly?

Not everybody put's the same value on language as you do. Text speak has a lot to answer for.
Not sure that's the case. I actually find it harder to type in txt *** than I do actually spelling the words fully/correctly. including in sms messages on my phone.

Sometimes, if I'm feeling especially ***** and *just* manage to stray into the second message territory when I'm composing an sms message I'll go back through the words and try to shorten them somehow. I may even have to resort to txt ***, which makes me feel dirty.

Anyway, back to my original point that I've not yet made....I think it's a general drop in the quality of peoples' ability to communicate effectively. They don't have to communicate as much as they used to. sms/e-mail seems to have taken the place of hand-written letters, more formal telephone calls or a plain old face-to-face conversation.

Plus, I believe standards in education are more lax than in the past. Hit me.

My biggest problem is expressing myself, not because my English isn't good enough, I have the same problem in my native Greek as well. I can understand that when speaking to someone face-to-face you can't proof-read what you are about to tell them, to make sure it makes sense, but since that is possible when posting something, why the hell not do it?

I have spent a lot of time on small posts, re-writing them to make them easier to understand, and focus on my point, I just wish everyone did the same!

Got to echo Arcade Fire with that. It isn't hard to write something literate at all.

However, what does annoy me are the grammar Nazis who pick up on really small errors that are obviously simple typing mistakes the person hasn't noticed, and they do it in a condescending fashion, pretending they have no idea what they guy is trying to say.

Example:

Person said:
I went home today and said hello to my parentsa, they were happy to see me

parentsa?

Is this a posh post where you all like to speak proper English?
Some may not have been brought up as well as you so if they
want to type or speak like that let them.

I went to a local school. No private education here, yet my posts are perfectly legible. There is no excuse.

I'm sure they are. I saw it in my own school. I was educated at the same place from 1984 to 1998 and I saw discipline relax and pupil/teacher respect drop with it. Standards of education will deteriorate if there's less of a divide between teachers and pupils.

I have lived on a council estate my entire life and gone to schools with terrible records yet I'm still capable of stringing together a sentence.

Why shouldn't everybody else be just as capable?

Posh?! I learned to speak English by watching American movies, hardly a posh way to learn the language...

It's annoying when people use incorrect grammer/spelling, but you have to remember this is just a forum and some people just can't be bothered.

Do the Op realise that aint everyone that speaks english as a first lingo? Also for people like me there is the problem of expressing oneself due to speaking a different language and compounded by dyslexia.

Also if language is a form of communication and expression, provided that one can read what am trying to say why moan about the grammatical aspect of things? People tend to do this this during a debate on this forum, which in my opinon is lame and weak. Am sure if i swear at someone on the forum and it has plenty of errors in them, it would still be a ban and not a mod correcting me or something.

My point is language is about communication and expression, provided that you understand what am saying please dont lay into the grammatical side of things. None of us is proffesional writter.

Question for you, do you think in English? As in, when you read someone's post, do you think about it and your reply in English?

But we all know why your English isn't brilliant El, we're just annoyed at the people who are too lazy to even try. Or worse they specifically use 'txt' talk which often takes longer to type than just doing it properly!

It isn't a problem if the persons first language isn't English and they struggle like you, but at least you attempt to make it legible.

It dont work like that for me, I read it in english but the "inner explanation or understanding to me" comes in a mixture of my own language and English. Also, when am replying it is a mixture of both but the ultimate end result is English.
I dont even know if that makes sense.

EDIT
Thinking is done same way.

Thanks for that Yoda.
See what I did there? I jumbled up the words. Yes? No? Ok I'll leave. :o

Well we have a compulsory education system here in the U.K, so that higher vs. lower class argument won't work.

Agree with El's point of people in this forum whislt in debates pointing out the opposition's grammar/spelling errors because they have no argument left. Its pathetic.

This maybe be a problem, if I try to think what you say in Greek, it will just confuse me, thinking in English seems to help.

I've been going in and out of these forums for a few months now and one thing I've noticed is the amount of people who can't seem to string a sentence together properly. In fact, it's not restricted to this forum alone - there is a fair amount of people in general who don't have that much of a grasp on the fundemantals of English.

I'm not certain, but isn't it 'fundamentals'. I'm not usually a grammar nazi, just thought if ever, this is the thread to do it :p.

As long as the post is understandable i don't have a problem with people not using full stops and capital letters and so on. It really isn't hard to work out what they're saying, in fact it takes no brain power at all to read something which has spelling and grammar errors. No idea why it's an issue on a forum.

whaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa 163 tried this mornin im sure they think am not workin lol think ill leave it till me dinner

Prime example of lazy typing. This is the kind of thing that annoys me, slows down my thread reading.
