Why can't some people talk properly?

If I'm unsure of the spelling of a word, I'll usually google it. This forum keeps me on my toes. :o :D

Firefox built in spell checker is my freind :p

It is a matter of respect: if you want to be taken seriously, you make the effort and present yourself in such a manner. It is a slightly contextual subject as regards to where you're posting and in what format (IM/IRC, forums etc.) but for the most part you don't want to come across as a plain jibbering idiot with no common sense or grasp of language.

The bottom line is that in important scenarios you would not find yourself being lazy with language, and even so, it's a minimal effort to actually put the work in and/or proof-read what you say, especially with correction tools so quickly at your disposal (so far as spell checkers being built into browsers).
On the flip side, some people are not good with language, but in this case it is okay—so long as it's clearly evident that effort has been made to present themselves properly. Referring to my original statement, it's simply a matter of respect... as an example if someone is on a forum asking for help and has clearly not bothered with any effort (ergo respect) concerning textual presentation, I will not help them as it is definitely undeserved. You want to be taken seriously? Take yourself seriously first.

Various posts on the GD forum move so fast that by the time you've typed your post, read it back, checked for spelling mistakes, added punctuation, checked for grammatical errors and added a few finishing touches, your post is probably meaningless.

I don't think there's much excuse for spelling errors that are common, but words that are not often utilized (;)) are perhaps forgiveable!! In the same way as apostrophies should be used correctly I think is easy to achieve but most people don'nt seem to uze them correctley.

As long as it is possible to understand what is being said I don't mind. A few spelling errors don't bother me but punctuation is important as if it isn't there it can give a sentence a totally different meaning.

*Rant warning*

It annoys the hell out of me if someone pulls a minor gramma or spelling mistake in my posts. If i was sat next to them i would beat the living crap out of them for just being so up there own ****. Stuck up snobs make me sick & if you have nothing better to do than pull peoples spelling or gramma then you need to get your head out your **** & get a life.
You knew what i meant but gleefully post in some sort of kudos upmanship BS. I say to all gramma/spelling natzis **** off. The worst types are those that ignore the fact you have ripped there argument to bits & just post some snide comment about spelling or gramma in the hope knowone will know you have no argument or decent comment.
Deflective BS if you ask me.
Yes i am poorly educated. Yes i am about as thick as they come. But it is ******* obvious i try my best But still you try to embarrass those that are not as well educated as you.
In my opinion You are the educated ones so YOU should know better & have better manners than me the uneducated one. Not like that is it though as you would rather embarrass a poster than be polite & decent about it.
You really **** me off BIG STYLE.

Gramma/spelling natzis can eat my crap & drink my ****, **** you all you sad ********.

I really fail to see your argument, malc30. I wasn't particularly well educated, but I've learnt a lot independently, which anyone can do.

well said, im in the same situation i never gotten the grasp of english grammar
i even used to sign myself up to afterschool english class when i was in school so i could actually get the grasp of punctuality.

Its not my fault that i find one subject really hard to learn and others come really simple, put down to it everyone knows that you are either good at one thing or the other, maths and english for example, i was extremely good at science but couldnt grasp english.

i find this post really stupid that you didnt think for one second that it could affect the majority of this community's feelings in reflect of their punctuation impedements.

Most of my spelling mistakes and so on are completely accidental. I'm not overly fussed about someone reading my forum post though so it's rare i'll read through and check it.

As I mentioned earlier I have been to some of the worst schools in the south of England so the level of education you received really isn't an excuse for not being able to grasp your own language!

I got a C in English at GCSE level and disliked the lessons, I don't often correct mistakes that people make either. However when it's done out of pure laziness it does annoy me.

I think TheDean put it better than me though :p

My argument/point is that i think it's rude to pull a minor gramma/spelling mistake & publicly try to embarrass a poster about it & because you are so well educated you should know & behave better than this.
Do i take the **** out of the posts i think are stupid ? I mean i can strip a car to nuts & washers can you ? Would i take the **** out of someone who cannot change a clutch or made a minor mistake in there description of the problem. Of course i wouldn't, i wouldn't be so Rude so why is it acceptable to rip someones poor spelling or gramma.
As has been said before, if it's obvious a poster has tried & is doing his best & you can understand his post/point what the **** is the problem.

TheDean.

The forum is run by members of the middle class. We must abide by the unwritten rule of using correct English.

This is why it annoys me so much though mate. The majority of people here are from a much higher class than me as i am really from the Gutter, on top of that i am over 40 years old & Education was something you avoided unlike today.
These people should know & act better than a Scum bag like me.

Don't let such a trivial thing get you down. Lots of students on this forum so we're all bound to encounter high levels of immaturity. Especially from my part. :o :D

I have to agree with the majority of people on here. Whilst I know my spelling and punctuation isn't always perfect I am confident that the point I am putting across is understood by the way it is written, and no "text" speak as it is referred to is used.

I also understand that some people are dyslexic and/or born outside of the UK and English is not their first language, however, that said, the majority of people that fall under either of these two headings try to make their sentences as legible as they can and the fact that is can be seen in the way their posts are contructed is a compliment to them

Unfortunately I do feel that the society we are living in today affects the way people type and speak, we have the dreaded text speak but also more commonly the "chav" speak in the younger generation that is becoming more widely used and accepted in society that makes it some people post the way they do.

In reference to Gillys post, I agree with him that there should be no reason why people cannot take the time to make sure their posts are readable, but not being picky, but I would expect a moderator of a forum to construct sentences and type in a legible manner anyway. (This is no way an attack on Gilly, just my opinion.)
