Why did this happen?

Secondly, Wembley chose not to have a fully retractable roof because having one would have a negative impact on the quality of the pitch due to poor sunlight/shadows:

I'm afraid this argument doesn't work. Wembley, just like every major premiership club with a similar modern stadium (e.g. Arsenal's Emirates Stadium) has pitch lighting which is rolled out between matches to keep the grass in tip-top condition.

expensive wages, so does that explain why it took so long to build, british builders on constant tea break?

You should see German builders, no-one else ever has.

I spent a year living in Stuttgart and saw loads of building sites, but I never saw anyone working on them; they were like the Marie Celeste, but with more bricks and less water.

So we have here, but here they can't work coz of environment rules, half the construction sites in the area of Amsterdam had to be halted to meet EU air quality rules , same as various other sites near dense places... An extra rush hour lane on the A1 has been closed for years ( okay not years, just above a year I think) also to meet EU rules about air quality. Bloody EU environment rubbish.

But then again, we do have Poles here building it all cheaply as unlike Germany, we allow them in...

So you guys get Wembly at £757 Million - and we (the Scottish) get the Scottish Parliment building at a cost of £414.4 Million

We've both been fleeced by Nu Labour and now we both have our White Elephants :(

Wembley was stupidly over-budget, but that doesn't change the fact that i can't stand the Millenium Stadium.

Just remembern that it was muppets like Ken Bates and the FA cronies who helped push the cost up. (Look at the FA facility at Burton for a pointer)
Then we get in an Aussie firm, who were so late with the building that it was a year out of date when it was handed over.

I still say now, the National stadium should have been built nearer the centre of the country to allow everyone easier access.

Just wait until the bill for the olympics gets out. Expect Britains first Trillion pound project.:)

I've been to both stadiums a few times and Wembley is by far the more impressive stadium.

Probably not worth that much more money but I've never been to a stadium like it.

untill you work with a few cockney builders you cannot understand how slow/lazy they are

its actually one for the "what amazes me" thread

its great working on a london site because you can work at 70% your normal rate and still look great !

What did you not like about the millenium, or find so impressive about Wembley(of the last few posts).

I've been to millenium, not the new Wembley. Millenium i've been to twice, I was very high up for a hell, brentford vs vale playoff final i think years ago now. Fantastic view despite being so far away, Emirates is the same in great view from the "worse" seats. Old wembley sucked from the further away seats due to the massive distance from pitch to even the first seats let alone up the back. New Wembley from tv also seemed to have an overly large gap from pitch to seats though no idea if view sucks from one end up the top to the other end of the pitch.

But the price is a joke, the land was owned already. They spent something like 100mil they said on things like power, security and keeping the stadium "safe" in all the delayed time it took to go from shutting it down to knocking it down. They just wasted money at every single stage of the thing so much so that it was a complete joke. Thankgod its only made a LOSS so far in running costs in the last year :(

To be fair, nothing really could be as big a waste as the millenium stadium turned out to be. That ended up as 1billion aswell didn't it?

Having been lucky enough to go to Wembley and the Emirates last year I have to say that Wembley is an awesome sight to behold, the views inside are amazing, having also been there for a concert its something else !

Arsenal's Emirates is basically a 2/3 scale model minus the arch and extra facilities of Wembley!

Shame it cost so much but hey that's London for you!

wembly did not cost the government that much, it was a fixed price contract and should also have included all the redevelopment costs in local area, eg additional train station etc.

Look at the cost of labour and land in london and compare with anywhere else. How do you move that much scrap through the capital? Lots of hard decisions with stupid solutions.

Does that £757m figure include money to upgrade the transport infrastructure around Wembley as well? I know Wembley Park tube was significantly improved as part of the redevelopment. The Millenium Stadium is a complete PITA to get to - Wembley isn't.

Are you kidding me?
Millennium Stadium is the easiest stadium to get to that I've been to. It's right next to the train station.
