Why did you buy a saloon over an estate?

I would argue the first generation Saab 9-5 looks better as an estate as well. For me the simple fact I have children and a dog makes the estate a no brainer. Not to mention its versatility. Took a whole bathroom to the tip. Would have had to hire a skip if I had a saloon :).

No estate in my car, and I didn't want a hatch. Toyed with the idea of the convertible, but preferred the look of the saloon.

The rear end looked way too big and fat compared to the saloon. Next car will be an estate though.

My mountain bike fits in the A4 saloon, but it's much more of a pain in the ass to load than the Avant. I can also pack more stuff around the bike in the Avant.

EDIT: Doesn't answer the OP's question, but whatever :)

Prefer a hatchback myself, actually had more space than the estate version.

I always prefer a saloon to hatch myself. Most hatchbacks have such poor boot space you are better off with a saloon anyway!

For me at least it is either Saloon or Estate. Hatchback is like some middle ground which has the negatives of the Saloon/Estates without any of the positives! It only seems the UK is mad about this. It is a completely different story on the continent.

Cost, lack of need for an estate now (we're not doing nearly as much big DIY), and not wanting to be the one asked "can you take this to the tip for me/pick this up" on a regular basis.

Oh and they didn't do the car we wanted in an estate variant.

I do miss the extra room the estate/7 seaters have at times, but the saloon is nicer to drive.

Some cars look better in an estate body, like the new Passat's they look much nicer as a estate, so does the A6, E-class and the Volvo V70 looks better than the saloon. But with the new S90 and V90 the saloon wins for me. I love a nice estate and would love another one now, due due to my saloon not being the most practical, with a buggy and the mother in laws wheelchair these days. But saying that not all estates are that practical, i had a 320i touring a few years ago looked awesome but the boot space was pants. I should have brought a proper estate.
Ok so whats better more practical these days, a estate or a SUV? I like SUV's and would love something like a XC90 or Toareg but the price to buy them and run is silly money. So i would easily go for an estate if i had the choice, as they have very similar running cost of the saloon version of the car.

Saloons are rubbish at getting large items through the tiny loading space, i can get comical amounts of stuff in the back of mine with the whole back opening up. The estate has nothing but downsides for me, weighs more, less space.

I have an estate and when looking at B7 RS4s it was only Avants I considered.

I have a B7 Avant now and it will only be replaced with another estate. Probably a 3 series 330D/335D Touring.

Looks are always a personal thing.
What isn't is the additional road noise that tends to be transmitted in the interior of the car from the "boot" area of most estate cars.
I've also found that some estates have different types of rear seats when compared to their saloon equivalent. An example being the Volvo S60/V70. The seats in the rear of the V70 were IMO nothing like as comfortable as the saloon.

I really love estates, I was seriously considering a Mazda 6 Touring at one point this year, and the new A4 Avant also.

In the end I went for a new Jag XF saloon, they don't have the estate version yet and I'm afraid to say the old style XF estate is probably one of the only estates I thought looked horrendous :(

Dont need the "extra" practicality. Saloon looks better, struggling to think of many estates that look better than the saloon. Cant think of any off the top of my head.

I don't own either, but as an owner of three dogs and someone who likes to camp, hike and arse about in the countryside I couldn't ever really find a use for a saloon.

I'd never reduce myself to a people carrier, a 4x4 would be lovely but let's face it; I drive a large hatchback many miles a year and I rarely get passed two passengers more than twice a year. I could easily just drive around in a van if a van was less utilitarian and more in line with a hatchback, I'm surprised such a thing doesn't exist, but then I guess when/if I eventually get my life together and get some fogbeast pregnant, a decent Estate would tick all the boxes.

They seem to be dying out though. Everyone's opting for cheap faddy hatchbacks on stilts or those saloon shaped hatchbacks which are frankly useless at either job when it comes to useful load space.

When I eventually find myself with the means to move on in the motoring world I'm gonna have a hard time I think. Unless I find myself in the cash, then it'll be an RS6 Avant please!

I get issued an estate for work and was really surprised just how impractical my current one (mk3 Focus) is :( Hatchback sized boot and zero leg room behind an average height driver. Great... I do think the Focus estate looks better than the hatch equivalent though so that is one plus I guess.

Previous motor was a Passat and that was massive inside but didn't feel much bigger to drive. Miss that old bus :(

If I end up providing my own car it will probably be a saloon for all of the reasons mentioned so far in the thread.
