Why did you choose AMD/ nVIDIA?

I chose AMD because there cards are a lot more power efficent and I can run 2 6950's unlocked on my 750w psu where as I would struggle to run 2 480's in sli.

I chose AMD as it was the only option for a multi-monitor setup at the time (my motherboard can't support SLI/Crossfire sadly) - gaming in 5760x1080 is a joy to behold! :D

'Well that's the thing drivers need to mature & you went from old tech with mature drivers to latest tech with less mature drivers.'

Spoken for the truth and the most sensible comment in this thread.

'I'll be going Nvidia next time, fed up with ATi's drivers and the latest Catalyst Installer hangs for me when trying to install/uninstall ATi's drivers, and the only way i can keep some of my sanity is by staying on the 10.5 driver that works flawlessly.'

This is the thing about drivers, I see them a bit like bios updates, only change them when you need to and if they dont work stick with what does. Dont change what aint broke!:)

But i think the thing that is broke in this case is the OS install & i would have a done fresh install in that case.

Can anyone advise on how to completely remove current drivers and install the latest one for AMD? I thought CCC had a section for drivers but it doesn't as far as I can see.

Uninstall using the ATI Install manager, then run driver sweeper to get rid of all ATI drivers. Download the new installer package and install.

CCC says this about my driver

Driver Packaging Version 8.85-110419a-118908C-ATI

is this current? trying to update driver in device manager says it is up to date.

dxdiag says I only have 742 of vram (if I've read it correctly) but its 1gb card and says 1024 in CCC.

:(

I've got an issue with ccc 11.7 atm whereby it drops the monitor on display port to standby for 5 seconds randomly. Very annoying and not present in 11.6

I buy whatever gives the best value at the time. Plus I've been gaming for decades and haven't had anything like the problems with drivers that many appear to suffer regardless who's card I've owned.

I have never understood the 'fanboy' mentality and find it all a touch childish tbh.

I go for the best card my budget will allow at the time
that.

I had just over £100 so the best for that price at the time was the 460. by christmas when i was buying it, the 6950 was released and i had more money to spend plus it could be unlocked to a 6970 (great value)
if i had gone for the 460 i would still have 1 monitor and not eyefinity.

my last 3 cards were nvidia (6600gt, 8800gtx and 260) but now I have an ati 5870 which is a powerhouse 100% love it, so much so that I will probably buy ati cards in the future.. I have had no problems with the card at all , whereas all my nvidia cards gave me issues at some point. (the 260 was horrible)

I went nVidia because my brother talked me into it with tales of physx and better driver support. Most of my recent cards have been nVidia, most of his ATI. Will probably try ATI next.

So no more of this trying to make out that NV don't have problems because i don't personally have one.

There's been plenty of different issues with both ATi and Nvidia over the years, what's your point exactly  You seem to get very defensive about your precious ATi cards, it's truly comical at times :p

As for me, I've generally had Nvidia cards in the past (currently on a 480) with the odd ATi card thrown in for good measure. I'm willing to try anything providing it gives me the performance I crave!

That's exactly my point.

And a lot of the problems in that thread have happened to ATI as well but the difference is to often when they happen on ATI, people scream buy an NV card to often here without a second thought.

I'm defensive of the facts whether you like it or not.

I have used both ATI and Nvidia. At the moment i am running a pair of HD6950 with 11.7 drivers and i have no problems to date with those cards. My last cards where Hd5770 and they are still running fine.
As these cards have been so good for me for the time being i am sticking with the red corner.
Reading the other posts, does it not come down to personal choice and what your happy with!!

3D vision support all in the driver, no messing with 3rd party ad ons you have to buy, don't know if this is still true but it was when I bought my 570 end of last year.
