Why do churches control a large number of schools?

Why is it in this day and age that a large proportion of primary and secondary schools are controlled by various churches?

Same reason a large proportion of primary and secondary schools are controlled by the government: because they're the ones who built them.

Or are you shocked that the government isn't urgently finding the money to buy out the church properties then restart the school from scratch.
