Why do forums make people talk smart?

Both uses are acceptable in the U.K. as Standard English.
True. Albeit it is not is not common usage.

I prefer the Z.
:(

It's probably something to do with the Government not requiring schools to teach basic grammar and spelling in the UK for the last thirty years or so. :(

I've only visited the USA a couple of times, but I never saw things like the horrendous grocers' apostrophe in "menu's" (sic) or on signs for "carrot's" (sic).
I can believe that a foreign country has grasped our own language better than we have. It is a sad state of affairs though :(

Oh, I'm sorry, sir. I'm andyspeptic, transmotic, even compunctuous to have caused you such pericombobulation. ;)

Something resembling it may abide, but t'willl be naught but a diaphanous and facinorous shade of its former glory.

To answer the original poster: I tend to write reasonably formally here. This is borne out of habit (I've written mostly as part of my education) and because I enjoy it.
If I use a more esoteric word here, it's the most appropriate one available. I might not down in the pub, because there, unlike on a forum, no-one has a dictionary to hand.
My thoughts exactly.

Words are tools, and if you use them correctly you do a better job, same as with any tools.
I wonder if posting them on a forum makes them "power" tools? ;)

No I just find your anal retentive attitude annoying
It's a thread about language, if you post an opinion and have badly spelled words - specifically ones easy to spell - when you're defending the area you live in expect to be picked up on it. Thats not being anally retentive, thats pointing out that your defence is a long long way from being watertight.

It sucks, but whilst I was studying chemistry at uni, they actually taught us to use American spellings for words in scientific reports because they've become the international standard for English spelling.
:(

Thats bad news.

Originally i didn't tend to put much effort into the quality of what i wrote, but personally, if for nothing else, at least it is good practice of my spelling/grammar on here, as they tend to clamp down pretty hard if it's crap. There are very few places anywhere which require a good standard of writing, hence the amount of crap CVs sent into companies (Those might remember Spie's thread a while back).

Also, it makes things clearer, and having been on this forum a while, even i've started to tell off my friends when they start using "txt speek". It's annoying and should be banned. OcUK what have you done to me?
