Why do hybrids not use diesel engines

Aren't there issues with diesel efficiency during warmup and the fact they take much longer to reach proper operating temperature. As such they are not inherently suited to a car design where the engine is repeatedly switched on and off during stop start traffic.

A diesel/hybrid seems to make perfect sense to me. The worst bit of most diesel cars is how lumpy and rattly they are when stationary. If they were hybrids, chances are that the car engine would be off and the car would be running in battery mode in stop start traffic. Perfect.
Additionally, both battery and diesel engines add weight, so neither is really suitable for a sports car. That's fine, mate them together into something that is not trying to be another BMW wanna-be, and focus on being comfortable and economical.

They are starting to realise you don't need a 6l V8 in your family saloon car, latest gen Civic is very popular

They still won't go diesel. The latest marketing stuff is a turbo / supercharged V6 "eco boost" or something like that.

The only diesels you see over here are in VAG cars or trucks. Shame really as a diesel would be perfect for me. Not all petrol stations will serve diesel either which can be a problem.
