Why do I keep playing COH and Supreme Commander!

OK I have to say I really enjoyed DOOM and also playing all the Wolfenstiens but I constantly find myself going back to playing Company of Heroes and Supreme Commander, I think some of it is for the nostalgia but they're games that I really don't think have been surpassed.

These games are over 10 years old and I don't think they've been equalled, certainly Supreme Commander. It could be I'm just an old fool but does anybody else feel that games have become very bland in the last decade.

With the hardware we have now I think we should be expecting much more, not the formulaic dross that seems to be the fodder that we are now presented with.

Thoughts?

Well, I wouldn't call you an old fool but it's just a matter of preference, as usual. I do enjoy older games and have many good memories of them but there are modern games that absolutely leave them in the dust conceptually, thematically, graphically and whatnot. Yes, many of them are overrated and formulaic but there are some gems out there.

It's hard to judge whether something like Supreme Commander has been equalled or not because it belongs to a fairly niché genre and on what basis can I assume it's better than other games when there are so many genres and things that are possible now and weren't before? Is it better than e.g. Witcher 3? Tekken 7? Bloodborne? Nier? TLoU? Dark Souls? Forza? Yakuza? Completely different genres. Supreme Commander might well be fantastic but I'd absolutely play any of the above over it simply because I don't like RTS too much. Also, every game in existence has been formulaic to a degree. It all boils down to whether you enjoy a given formula.

I can agree many current games are overhyped dross but at the same time the last decade brought many titles which are now my favourite games ever, or at least something I consider quality entertainment.

I still play CoH as well... Like you say probably not bettered after all these years which is pretty sad really!
I'd still play C&C generals too if I could find my copy!

SupCom was a bit ahead of its time upon release. Fantastic game. If it was released now and not ten years ago, it'd still make the grade. Shame they went backwards with 2, but that's usual the way of it.

Some games just hit the spot - I'm the same with Civ 2. I do play the newer ones too but there's just something about Civ 2 that was never done quite as well again. I might go 12 months without playing it but I will go back to it.

CoH is still the best RTS out there IMO (including CoH 2!) - I play it all the time for a quick skirmish against the AI!

Had some mammoth battles with 3 or 4 of my mates against the hard AI in the past - once our ticker literally reduced to 1 and we were able to capture a point and go on the offensive to win!

I suspect a lot of gamers have one or two old school gems that they still play from time to time. Some games just click. For me, the old games that I keep going back to are all fairly relaxing with little to no chance of anything happening in game that will be a surprise.

I'm a sucker for Transport Tycoon via OTTD. Probably reinstall it every year for a few weeks of play. Must be at least 20 years old that game.

Fire up game, switch off brain, and play.

Another one here still playing COH (Blitzkreig mod)...pretty much have a go against the hard AI at least once a day.

I bought the full package of COH2 when it was on sale...barely looked at it :/

The devs just got so much right with COH, and the brilliant BK mod really enhances it, almost a new game with it.

Why the COH2 hate?

Its essentially the same, but a bit better in reality with more bits and bobs.

The worst thing for me is the MP browser, outside of that though, the gameplay is solid.

I still play SupCom Forged Alliance a good few times a week along with a mod whose name I've forgotten right now. It is still so much fun and I don't use that GOG replacement launcher/community thing - just solid skirmishes on the default included maps. Setons Crotch ftw!

No hate from me for COH2, just that the few times I've tried it, it seemed to me they'd gone backwards with the UI and controls.

I must give it another go and try to get into it.

Try AOTS its the modern day equivalent of SupCom and seems to run much better IMHO.

Have they improved it much lately? I played it when it first came out and although it had some good ideas and felt a bit like a spiritual successor in the making aspects of the game felt half finished or missing. ie no air transports vehicles, no real tech levels for units and lack of unit variety.

That map for me represents everything Supreme Commander got right, from the large scale to the balance of air land a sea units needed to win.

Nothing wrong with CoH, me and a few mates reinstall it every few months (CoH2 that is) to do some co-op against the AI.
At the moment Totalwar: Warhammer 2 is filling that void.

CoH was and is a great game and so was Sup Com. For me, I got a great group who I play with and we pick up games and just play the life out of them. Been playing together now for around 12 maybe 15 years and we sometimes have a blast on them now and again. At the moment we are playing AI war Fleet Command. An old game with all the expansions and DLC for £3.90. Still massively enjoyable with a group of good friends online.

I would be playing SupCom: FA more often, except for the bug which basically slows the game time down as the game progresses on larger maps. I did a bit of digging around, but it seems there isn't a way to fix it, meaning massive battles soon become unplayable :/

I agree, I wish they had patched that bug out but obviously it won't happen now. It's something to do with the corpses lying around still having AI assigned to them or something like that I read a long time ago, which slows everything down over time.
