Is it some form of optical assualt to teach me a lesson ? Do they not care that 35mph in a 60mph is causing an unneccesary tailback for 1/2 a mile . Do they have to drive if not on the dashed line, then astride it.

I don't get it, I never make reckless overtakes, both of my cars have great in gear performance and are ideal to just foot down and go if I have to, and make the pass without fuss , but why the flash ? Have I just woken up the driver or offended them.

Just what is their problem, 99% of driver just want to make progress and cause the least amount of hassle to their fellow drivers.

... and breathe

Its because they don't want to be overtaken I'd imagine. I just either shove my rear fogs on to give them it back, or, if they persist, I slow right down until they get annoyed :D

I have also seen people flash me when Im nailing it along an A road, come round a corner and despite being perfectly on my side of the road, not even near the white line yet a car coming the other way towards the corner flashes me?? This has happened several times, at first I thought they were warning me a police car ahead or something, but now I just think they felt like "optically assaulting" me because I was going fast towards them.

You sure they are not flashing you to let you know that it is safe to pull back in ?

I have a very chilled drive into work in the mornings now and it's basically a long string of cars all travelling at the same decent speed pretty much all going to the same place. Sometimes I'll get someone tailgating on my rear quarter for miles even though there is nowhere to pass and even if in front of me they would still be the same situation. There is one very short passing point halfway into the journey so this person may have been tailgating me for about 6 miles and I'm sick of it. The overtaking manoeuver takes place and they are in front of me, one car ahead of where they were. And that's the way the journey will stay for the next 6 miles, so I'll flash them 'worth it.' Then I'll watch them tailgate the next person for the rest of the journey.

Long pointless reply really because I'm sure you're overtaking for a good reason!

Usual reason for people being flashed when overtaking is that they pull back in very close to the car they have overtaken. I find it's normally younger drivers who misjudge distance in that way.

Q. Why do people flash when you overtake

A. Because they are muppets

They come from the same breed of people that :

- Do 40mph in a 60 only to go into a 30 limit and keep on doing 40.

- Sit in the middle lane of the motorway doing 55.

- When going down a road at night doing 40 - 35 slow down when they see car lights comming.

LOL QFE but amend the middle lane is now the outside lane also :( dont they understand when ppl are going faster than them in the middle lane, hell this morning a lorry was going quicker than this driver in the outside

I remember when coming back from basildon it was a 50 road dead straight for about a mile and nothing coming the other way.

I was behind 2 cars both doing like 25.

i pulled out and nailed it and overtook the pair of them and the car that was ahead of the queue simply put his main beams on and left them on. so i twisted my mirror and put my rear fogs on.

he shut up after a minute :D

I had this happen the other week with some fool in a Transit van. He was driving at around 35mph on an A road with a 60mph limit, and behind him there were 3 other cars and then me. After 1 mile of everyone getting bored I spotted a gap, made sure it was clear and signalled, dropped a couple of cogs and went by the line. I was moving, no question, but its all about reducing the TED and once back in front I was on the 60mph limit.

BANG, on came the headlights, first full beam, then flashing. He was more interested in making a point (that would be lost on any sane person!) than any problems he caused by dazzling cars coming the other way. I was passed an back in with nothing coming the other way, and I did not chop him or cut him up as its a nice wide road, he was just totally inept and my car coming past him seemed to un-nerve him pure and simple.
