Why do people hide their number plates?

I don't know why someone wanting to do some crime needs to clone a plate from the same kind of car. They could stick any old plate on it since it's all checked by automated systems now. The chances of a cop checking it are very slim.

Automated checks do get carried out but the percentage of police cars with ANPR is still very low, there are still lots of vehicle checks done 'manually' by police every day.

The reason they clone a car with a plate matching the correct make, model and colour to the one they are using is precisely so that nothing appears suspicious should a manual check be done, where as if the plate is from a completely different vehicle then the officer conducting the check will know something is up straight away.

I wonder if a cloned plate was on the same coloured car (but a different make/model) how many police would pick up on it anyway? Not a dig at the police but nobody can know every single car model and i assume the reg tells the colour correct most/all the time.

Most cops I know (and work with, being one myself) are reasonably good at recognising different cars. There are lots of petrol heads in the police!

I had the police show up at my door some years ago. Someone had cloned my plate and stolen fuel from a forecourt. I'd posted photos of my car including the plate online.

Ever since I hide the plate.

To be fair Housey, your Polo is pretty nice! I'd trade my Ibiza for it :D

As for the op, I find number plate hiding really annoying because if I'm car shopping I like to view the MOT history before deciding to go and see a car in person.

Colour, make, year and model is all you need, with perhaps an informed guess as to basic type, ie a saloon, SUV, hatch or estate.
They don't need to know if it's a 1.9 TDi 110PD or a 1.9 TDi 130PD.

But if you're following a car, it usually says what it is on the bum end, anyway!!
