Why do people think it acceptable to break the Speed Limit.

There's a dual near me that was dropped to 50 for works (adding a lane). Because of the length of the works the council put proper 50 signs up, not the temporary ones on trestles.

Works have now ended and the council refuse to restore the previous 70mph limit, claiming '50mph is now the limit for safety'

I do upto 70, despite the signs and it's perfectly legal.

The issue the council have is that the 50 signs they've erected are now INVALID. The council lowered the limit during the works to 50 via a TTRO (Temporary Traffic Regulation Order). The order states that the speed reduction is cancelled upon completion of works, at which point the original TRO (Traffic Regulation Order) which states a limit of 70mph is reinstated.

I've been pull over once for speeding "in a 50mph zone". Knowing this was likely I had the paperwork in the car. The officer was very interested and asked me to send him copies. I was allowed to continue on my way.

I noticed there are several sections of dual-carriageway in Wales like this, and one which is signed for "safety reasons due to weak barrier" where quite a lot of people were doing 70 despite the 50 signage, quickly looking up one of them the TTRO has expired. Interesting.

I think the speed limits now are absolutely stupid personally. So many areas that used to be NSL are now 50 or even 40 mph.

Motorways are far too slow also.

Even a basic Hatchback now can quite easily cruise safely at 80mph.

Trucks should also be derestricted to 65 so they can overtake dawdlers on the inside lane that decide to yoyo up and down the speedo from 40-60.

The counter argument now isn't so much speeds of 70+ are unsafe because the cars cant do that safely but that it causes greater noise and air pollution.. Quite how that relates to EV's I am not sure(probably some nonsense to do with greater tyre wear) but there we are

Given the average standard of driving I can't agree with increasing limits.

(not being entirely serious) however if the government really are dedicated to getting people into EVs 1 cost effective solution which could be a v big hook to getting people into them could be when ever there is a speed restriction due to low air quality (happens a lot on M6 around Birmingham so I presume other places too) they could only allow EVs into the outside lane and stick to 70. filthy oilburners could be restricted to 60 and have to stay in the 1st 2 lanes ;)

Yea like anyone would take notice of that. I wouldn't :P

with all the cameras on the M6 I can't imagine it would be hard to enforce.... and if you refused well the fines you would get would go into the police coffers I guess

Whilst I can't argue the first point @bigmike20vt your second point needs clarifying, as it seems to be a common misconception

"Money from speeding fines (Fixed Penalty Notices and court fines) goes to the UK's Consolidated Fund at HM Treasury, not to local police or councils."

Whether or not this would apply to being in the wrong lane on a restricted motorway I'm not sure as, for example, if you drive in a bus lane I think the fines go to the Council.
