Why do people think it's ok to do this?

I was in a lovely little boutique hotel in Vermont last week, small with only about 20 rooms and they had a pool, nothing special, but it did seem that people laid out towels on loungers (these were yanks of course) and then went out in their cars or back to their rooms to do whatever. I of course being an arrogant sod simply walked up and removed said towels and lay down but I was asked by one gentleman why I felt I could sit on 'their' sofa bed. I simply said you were not here for the 2 hours I have been laying on it and I missed the place where you could buy the sofa beds, but would happily buy my own if they could point me in the right direction. It is a mind set that seems to extend stateside too, very odd but I have none of it. Leave the pool for more than a beer run (no beer by this pool....WTF) or loo break fine, but **** off for 2 hours then all bets off an I am moving in.
