Why do people troll?

You think that's bad? Go spend a week posting in the Football forum.

Yeah I posted a few times in there, once trying to dispense some reality to the sycophants about England's failed world cup bid.

What a fantastic experience that was.

:D Hahaha

Other than that I don't bother, poor wee AFC hardly ever gets a mention. :(

People troll because when they are behind a screen, they are given the capability to go "all-out" without any physical or emotional restraints.

It's the way the cookie crumbles, unfortunately.

I'm a mod on a small forum with 40000 members. since they realised I'm ban happy theres a lot less trolling...:p

they insult and make derogatory comments about the advice of others.

acting like a ****** for no good reason.

the sole purpose of insulting others

Being a ******* on the internet is not trolling, it's just being a ******* on the internet.

Trolling is posting stupid/controversial/odd things in order to get a reaction from people and seeing how many people you can string along before everyone realises what you're doing.

You see it most often on here in the guise of people holding patently absurd positions in arguments just to attract the righteous fury of everyone else.

A good recent example was the guy who got the Macbook/iPad etc. for Christmas and posted saying 'Unhappy tbh, was expecting a car' and had a load of people firing off 'OMG you spoilt git'. That was a good troll, if a little obvious. It wasn't even remotely true, he was perfectly happy with what he got but he still hooked a fair few people into reacting because of it :p

Just abusing and insulting people though, that's not trolling, that's just being a knob.

I'm guessing it came from the whole troll under the bridge thing. Not actually sure though.

It's from a fishing term

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trolling_(fishing)

Whereby you draw baited lines slowly through the water waiting for bites

This would make more sense if people actually knew what trolling is these days though, now it just seems to be a catch all word for 'someone on the internet who has annoyed me'
