Im confused why PS2's still sell tonnes of units with essentially 3 next-gen consoles on the market

Says how 360 outsold PS3 and Wii combine, but PS2 still outsold all 3; just curious to who still buys these things...

Dont turn this into a flame war - im simply just curious to what appeals so much to get a very old console, its never appealed to me nor have the games.

:)

I know what you mean, I think its because their so cheap now and there's so many popular games for them. You don't usually get hardcore gamers playing only PS2's do you?

Fantastic Games, Loads to choose from and they have gone down in price now, i might get one now they cheaper (jus playin... although i might get one cuz i sold mine)

See - Im a mind reader :) Although I would never get a PS2 as Im a MS Fanboy.

PS2's are just good to pick up and play.

Units are still sold because of addons suchs as the Guitar and dance mats etc.

Plus, they're a resonable price.

I suppose if they are cheap and whatnot then yea; i suppose im more of a hardcore gamer though so look more to the future then casually playing. :)

I agree with what's been said. The console is cheap, the games are cheap, some versions of games are better on the PS2 than next gen consoles (FIFA, Pro Evo, Guitar Hero II), it's still got some great exclusive games coming out for it (Okami, God of War II) and the catalogue of games is probably the broadest of any console ever released.

Same here. The Xbox was the first console I ever bought and I loved it to pieces - especially playing on Halo and Halo 2. Thats basically what made me want a 360. If I had gotten a PS2 first it may have been different.

I can imagine parents of younger kids who want to buy a console will be swayed by the PS2, not least because it's cheaper than the "next-gen" consoles and the abundance of games available (which are also cheaper than the games for the 360/PS3/Wii) but also because younger kids aren't necessarily bothered about graphics.

I can think of a bucket load of PS2 games suitable for younger kids, but I'm struggling to find that many for the 360, PS3, Wii. That's not meant as a slur to the newer consoles, just an observation.

Maybe that helps explain it...?

I'm pretty sure that hardcore gamers are the minority though and the mass market will be the casual gamer. Also the PS2 has quite a few kiddy games out for it so you can imagine them being bought for kids who have just reached that console hungry age as Mum and Dad can't afford to get them 360, PS3 or even Wii.

I just recently purchase a PStwo myself, but its a present and was bought more out of guilt for my Son as I broke his original PS2 by erm... tinkering with it! ;)

This is why the PS3 may be a failure in its own success type scenario, look at the old xbox for example, all support and games have ceased now that the 360 is out, yet you have the PS2 with its massive catalogue of games and game company's still producing games for it on a very cheap platform to buy and produce games for with development costs are vastly lower. Until the PS3 comes down to at least £200 for in whatever varient of model then i just don't see the PS3 shifting in large volume week in week out, this is where MS has got the pricing right on its Core and Premium

cheap with a cheap back catalogue of great games .

still some awesome games coming out for it

guitar hero 2 anyone :D

i guess some people just dont care about the best graphics and cant get hold of a wii yet

It never hurt the PS2 launch when the PSone was still out and that went down to about £50. I think it's just price effecting the PS3 at the minute, but this will change when production costs come down and likewise the cost of the unit. I know that historically consoles have never succeeded if sold above £200 but I think that due to inflation and what not the limit is probably still more like £300, imo, so we wont see the PS3 flying of the shelves until prices drop below this. This is just a thought though and unresearched so I may well be well out!

Because to the casual gamer they don't seem dated at all.
Lol, there may be people out there who think "wow, it's like a PSP which you can play on your TV!"

I think the Playstation did quite well when it first was released at £299 but then again the competition was with the Saturn which was £399 so it was still the cheaper of the two.

The PS3 wont do quite as well as the original Playstation to start off since the Wii & Xbox360 are the cheaper ones this time around and have the head start.

If the PS3 does indeed sell for £335 which was rumoured then I'm pretty sure that I will buy one this year whenever they are released

Apart from online and better graphics (the majority don't care about either) what does the 360 or ps3 really offer anyone they can't get cheaper with a PS2?

I see what your saying, like i say i think its just my way of thinking; i forget that im quite a hardcore gamer, as are my friends and a lot of people on these boards - i often forget of the millions of casual gamers and younger players.
