Why Do PS2's Still Sell Loads Of Units?

i would think a 'hardcore' gamer would want to play every system and not just look to the future.

There are loads of quality exclusive ps2 titles out there. I never understand the mad rush to get the latest games even if they are pap just because they are new. I think there are loads of absolute classics out there just waiting to be played from the older systems.

Exactly, I think it's great to be happy with that and not chase the newest stuff.

Pick up a cheap xbox/ps2/dc/gc then pick up the AAA games for just a few quid a piece. You can have just as much if not more enjoyment from that than the people forking out ten times as much on their stuff.

There's no reason why someone who does that can't be a 'hardcore' gamer.

Wish I could be like that but I'm a complete gadgets fiend... I was happy with my PS2 until my PC graphics started to outshine it stupidly and then I found it hard to go backwards.

I guess some people are just not retro gamers in the slightest and are complete graphics whores... I remember the first time I downloaded a C64 emulator only to boot it up and have all of my very happy memories completely blown away with the totally carp but wholly accurate graphics!!! I learnt after that to never look back.

Oh damn, why am I such a CONSUMER?

That's pretty much exactly what I was going to post. A hardcore gamer isn't someone who only wants graphics, it's someone who wants to play lots of games.

There are still a lot of games coming out for the PS2, especially party games such as Guitar Hero 2, Singstar and new versions of Buzz. They are a reasonable price, and the games are a lot cheaper than the "next gen" equivalents. It allows people who don't want to run up mass amounts of debt to play games ;).

My guess would be three reasons

Price - they are about £100 or less now
Availability - you can walk into any games store and buy one without any problems (unless you want a new colour)
Need - people replacing their dying PS2 with a new one

Strange, I dont remember reading any reports about PS2's dying?

Do you not think that the massive back catalogue of games has a pert to play int it's success?

I just bought a PS2 a few weeks ago, primarily because there are a few games that I wanted to play that I couldnt get the XBOX 360. The main one was the Final Fantasy series (Not FFXI which is some MMORPG thing). I will prolly end up getting a PS3 eventually for FFXIII.

Brand awareness mostly. Ask most people in the street and they will know the playstation brand. Also the huge amount of games, the fact its been around a fair while will mean a few have now broken down and people wont want to shell out for a new console games accessories when they can buy another ps2 and use what they have already. I wouldnt mind a ps2 to play MGS 3 thru and some more GT.

When you have a userbase in the tens of millions, many 2-3+ years old you will always have a fairly good turnover of units dying and being replaced if there isn't something that will do the same job (IE play the games you've collected over the past few years).
Even just a fairly small percentage a year failing after the first year* adds up when talking about 50+ million installed units.
I'm not talking mass failures, just general failures due to wear, tear and accidents.

I think the back catalogue does have a lot to do with it, but the price (and thus relative value - which I have mentioned), and other factors also come into it a lot.

At the moment the PS2 is the cheapest of the current main consoles in much of the world.

*Say 5% of the total installed userbase fails every year after the first (when failures would be replaced under warrantee), it can still mean several million sales a year.

Fair enough, I just misunderstood as you listed it as one of the main four reasons when the amount of people replacing dead units would probably be fairly low.

Singstar, i do believe this in itself sells the PS2 in droves. For party games etc, i don't think the PS2 can be beaten. My missus bought a PS2 just for the singstar for a new years eve party and i have to say it was a brilliant night, everybody wanted a go.
