Why do so many people not know what this sign means?

I often drive through a village which has a sensible 30 mph limit, but as you come out of it you reach a reasonable stretch of country road with the sign above displayed as you enter it, and no street lighting.

Now if memory serves, that means 60 mph. So why do I always get stuck behind the guy/girl who doesn't understand what that sign means (thinking it means 'no stopping' or something) and carry on pootling along at 30, or if I'm lucky thinks it means they can go 40.

I want to make it clear, I am not one of those bar stewards who sits up your backside flashing my lights cause you doing 55 in a 60, but when people are going half the speed or as good as, it is frustrating.

Maybe just make a 60 sign and be done with it.

Rant over.

Average speed around here is around 38 mph. That's through 30 limits, 40 limits, 50 limits, 60 limits...

Well it doesn't mean 60 mph actually. It actually means National Speed Limit. And also remember that it is a limit not a target, yes I know people will argue the making progress side of things but my point does still stand. Also you should be taking road conditions into account before you go tearing off at 60.

It means 60 the same way as we have 30 zones or 40 zones or 50 zones.

Ie we don't have any of those things.

The sign in the OP is a national speed limit applies sign. The max speed your allowed to travel is dictated by the vehicle your driving.

30 zones don't exist.

30 limits do

It a max limit NOT a target

As above, you taken my sentence out of context...

Now if memory serves, that means [National Speed Limit for that type of road is] 60 mph.

To the people saying "It's a limit, not a target", I stated clearly I don't get annoyed with people doing 50-60 after the sign but when people clearly don't know what it means it is justifiably frustrating. They're not being safe, they're being ignorant to the Highway Code.

Even so, would you not get annoyed is you had to do 10 miles behind someone doing 1 mph? If you said 'no' then you're lying but if you gave any affirmative response then we both have a fuse only yours maybe longer than mine.

And 40MPH to 50MPH for other vehicles on the same road. Then include mopeds which have a limited speed of 36MPH? Bicycles.. Horses..

But I don't have an issue with those things, most of which can be easily safely overtaken without looking like an aggressive idiot. I'm referring to cars in my OP, apologies if that wasn't clear.

But in your OP you also demonstrated lacking the knowledge also.

"maybe a 60 sign" its NOT a 60 limit its a NSL

I'm afraid I will harass people doing 45 in a 50. It's annoying!

Yes, that's national speed limit, which is 60 on a single carriageway.

45 in 50 I can accept, 20mph under whatever limit on a nice dry sunny day really bugs me. The worst kind are actually those who does 40mph at whatever speed limit it is.
