Why do some cars block GPS signals?

Why would you be surprised about an E60 M5 above anything else out of interest?

Gurdas- Really? I get absolutely no GPS at all in my W220 even in the back, on either my iphone or standalone tomtom. Found exactly the same the last time i was in a W221 too (only tried iphone). Thats very strange.

My 306 GTI-6 had this problem, the sat nav took an age to connect, but eventually it would work but lagged a little behind the actual cars position.

I have no idea why that may be, never had to use a tomtom in it ever though so don't know if that works. But my iPhone has worked, I remember us traveling somewhere really random and the satnav was showing a dodgy route so remember getting my iPhone out to check for alternatives.

I cant think that it can be the case given that we are talking about an S430 vs an S55K, but i wonder if mine has some sort of optional coating that your dads one doesnt have specced? :confused:
 
The solar coatings block IR not UV, there not there to stop you getting a suntan or fading your dashboard.

The phone can see the 'cell' masts out out of the side windows, Not the same story with the GPS would be my guess as the windscreen mountings of your typical aftermarket unit gives a direct line of sight up to the sky.
