Why do you have a Mac and a PC?

Just out of interest as I have been looking at a new iMac when they get a refresh.

I have noticed that a few people have both. Are there any advantages to this seeing as nearly everything can be done on either platform?

Have a macbook pro and a pc, the mac is for uni work and the pc is for gaming, couldn't afford a mega macbook pro for skyrim as my old one was struggling and instead put a few hundred quid together for a cheap gaming pc.

I can't wait for the mini to get updated as everything is sold off and I purchase a mini and an ipad for all my computing needs...

I'm just considering getting an iMac for a family PC. The house is awash with iPad's/phones/pods. It get's messy when the rest try to do things with their aging laptops like sync their devices, download stuff onto PC and edit things. They always end up using my PC system and as anyone on here knows, that can be quite inconvenient.

So, I think a nice iMac with a universal dock should make it easy for all as I know it's very easy to setup multiple libraries with a Mac.

As I said though, I wont buy until there's a refresh and will just pray for a retina refresh.

Windows is far better than OSX IMO. ;)

You're wrong but that's ok! ;)

I'm of the opinion that if you're technically minded and you love delving into an OS you really relish OS X and what it offers. On the flip side it's great for the non technically minded due to it's ease of use.

Don't have a PC right now, but if I were going to spend the same amount of money right now on any setup rather than my iMac, I would have gone for a single Mac (probably an MBA) along with a 27" monitor and a PC. The MBA would be used for everything else, the PC for gaming and anything that requires power (video encoding). I personally find Mac OS to be a far superior OS, it has been far more stable, reliable, and I prefer the way it works as a whole. In my opinion, Microsoft are continually struggling to get it right when it comes to personal computers.

That's my personal opinion anyway.

If you're buying as a family system, it might make more sense and be more economical to pick up a cheaper Windows PC instead and use iTunes on Windows. I know it's absolutely ****, but it's worth the saving!

ive always had pcs and fancied a change so i bought a macbook.

ive found its far better than a windows laptop.

i wouldnt have one as a main computer though, mainly because im far more experienced with windows.

OSX is a stagnant OS and Apple haven't really done much with it for years, and their support is poor. I wouldn't consider it a reason to buy a Mac.

Fortunately the hardware is excellent enough to stand on its own and as long as you like the look and feel of OSX, it does the job well enough and compliments the hardware nicely.

PC is for gaming/batch Photoshop work that would bring my MacBook to its knees

MacBook Air for portability/uni work/general on the go stuff

I'll agree that the support is poor. Some users like stability, and Apple don't offer anything close to Microsoft in this regard.

However, Apple haven't really done much with it? It's more of a case of whether it needs to be done; ML competes comfortably with the latest versions of Windows, what more do people need? Just because Microsoft redesign their operating system every few years doesn't mean that Apple need to, and Apple have been focused on the larger features such as iCloud integration rather than bringing smaller features to apps, which is more sensible for the future. Look at Windows 8 - many will stay put merely because they want familiarity. It's much like the hardware; why change something that works?

PC for gaming and general office work.

MAC Book Pro for anything else, had Dell, Sony and ACER for laptops did not like any of them. Dell failed twice in 6 months and resulted in them changing the laptop for new one.

Nobody ever agrees with me anyway, I'm used to it!

But for me, Apple have actually turned me off Macs with their miserly support, poor security policies and general lack of core OS improvement. The last version I got excited about was Snow Leopard. Back then it's window management was actually better than Windows itself! These days it's just bogged down (quite literally in the case of Lion) with superficial widgets.

But again, that's just me. OSX is still more than good enough for most people I just think its vastly overrated.

I think all I can reply with this is: :D

I'm starting to hate these debates but glad theres at least other companies giving it a good go keeping inline with how users want. :)
