Why do *you* want a faster computer?

And I suppose, how fast is fast enough?

I have vague ideas that I don't want to wait for the computer to do anything. Ever. But in truth, web browsing and openoffice would probably do well enough, with film playback a bonus.

I'm about to spend ages taking quad core up another 100MHz, and in truth I don't know why. So I'm wondering what the other people on here think.

I'm really happy with the speed of my system. I'm not a heavy gamer anymore, but what really matters to me is the time it takes to start up the system. A fast hard drive is priority for me, and having fast CPU and RAM will get you to boot the operating system faster. It takes me about 35-40 seconds to fully boot Windows 7.

I'd love my PC to boot faster. I'm not sure I'm booting from fastest HDD in fact. Also I'd like more demanding games to load faster, pretty sure this is also related to the HDD...

My PC certainly isn't slow enough to justify an upgrade however (and I've got a stock Intel Duo E6600 @ 2.4GHz). I do intend to research overclocking very soon however. Been into the BIOS a bit, getting used to monitoring applications (not sure thats the right term but stuff like CPU-Z) and getting to understand the statistics and relationship of PC components. And I've discovered OCUK is an incredible resource for all things techy. That is to say the time is right.

The same thing happens everywhere, take people buying sports cars you cant actually use them to their full potential but people are still willing to throw money at them. Its just bigger = better in everyone's mind!

*Shrug* Not mine. I like to really know I'm using my money to its greatest potential (if that makes sense). This is one reason cars aren't of any great interest to me. I'm always flabergasted at the amount my mates throw at cars.

i want a pc where it cold boots as if it was asleep.

I want to be able to render scenes in a blink of an eye (not, 2 weeks!)

I;d love programs to be already running, and just flick to them as and when I need them and not worry about loading them.

Would love a quick boot up...have had some issues with not having a usable desktop from pushing the power button for about 2mins. Icons take a long time to appear. Would love a faster HDD :)

Would love mine to be silent so i can watch DVD's and Game without turning the volume way up, I guess its my own fault though as i didn't look in to things enough when i built it last year, still the best system I've owned to date though.

M,

If you wanted to do something why wait for it?, so do it when you want to. I love being on a good comp personally I would spend my life doing stuff with comps but its not possible. ON THE OTHER HAND if comps were all epically slow I wouldn't go anywhere near them I HATE a slow comp!!!

i want a faster computer becuase i like big numbers.... i have no need for anything else but i have two more 24" screens coming soon, and prob another x2

The more we have something that's faster we start wondering how we managed without it. e.g. Dual screens, when you've got one you think "this is fine" and then when you get 2 you think "OMG WIN" and you keep getting more screens. Same with the speed, you always want it to go that little bit faster and you just keep on going. We will get to the point eventually when everything is instant :D
