Why do *you* want a faster computer?

in my experience it's better to do the job right in one shot than have to keep buying upgrades over a few months, you might not need the specs of a high end computer but it's better to have it and not need it than need it and not have it. Low spec computers can sometimes end up costing (over the long term) more than mid range or high end computer systems if they don't do what you want them to do.

What are the specs D D Danneh?

It's a Packard Bell W3301 Easynote. Set me back 800 notes when I bought it, about 6 years ago.

1.58GHz mobile sempron 3000+ (it's a unique socket, can't even upgrade it)
2GB of RAM (came with 1GB, but I added a couple more sticks in)
Integrated graphics

And it takes an age to do anything. 2 minutes to load up photoshop CS3, 2 minutes to load up flash, 30 mins to boot, 30 mins to shut down (seriously, takes 5 mins for it to bring up the shut down button).

Just recently some keys have started failing. I have to use the on-screen keyboard, or copy and paste to type X or V. Ctrl, Alt, Del, or loads of the function keys are dead too. I can live without Ctrl, Alt or Del, as there are alternatives, but not without my beloed shortcuts (Ctrl+V! :(), and the dead function keys are annoying too, seeing as that's how I adjust the screen.

Still, it's lasted me well, but it's definitely time for an upgrade, so I might as well go for the best I can get.

nd i though my laptop was bad :p.
Yeah no point of going for anything under a x4 940v or a i7 anymore since they have gone down in price so much.

Yeah, i7's what I'm going for. 4870 1GB, as I can't afford an i7 and 4870X2, but I've gone for a nice big 850W Corsair PSU so I can get one in the future.

All I'm waiting for now is the money. I've got about £500, and I'm taking a £700-800 chunk out of my uni bank. I don't like the idea of taking money out of there, but since my mum owes me about £700, I can just get her to pay it back into the fund when she gets it. Plus I can run it through my grandad's business to get VAT back. S'all good.

Have you tried reinstalling the OS?

Because I can??

bingo, because we can, and because we want too.

my PC (as per sig) is liturally nothing more than an internet, office, MSN PC, which gets used to watch the odd film, i haven't played a game on it once!!!

I've got the pc i have, because A i can, and B, i like having it tbh!!!

Have you tried reinstalling the OS?

Yes, seeral times. Tried completely wiping eerything and starting oer, reinstalling OS and driers, tried a new hard drie, it's just the computer that's slow.

But I'm overdue for a nice PC, so...

Also, I hadn't thought about the 4890 as it seems to be at least a month away. Should I go for a really cheap card now and buy a 4890, or just stick with a 4870 now?

Does your "V" button not work Danneh? :D

I'm happy with my system, although I'd like to be able to play top of the range games on the very highest settings, but I'm not really too fussed, as long as it runs it smoothly I'm very much happy =]

I use my pc to its full potential at the moment, so a faster pc would be nice!

I do a lot of databse editing with GIS software for university! often playing with maps and models that are many GB in size and hve to be rendered.

I also like to play games (no time in term time though), so a good GFx card is always good.

I am not one for buying the latest card, for example i would buy 2 x2's rather than 2 295's !

I am looking forward to being able to upgrade in the summer before doing post grad study :D

i agree with slowrunner...on the broadband ..but i want to play all the newest games at the fastest and best resoultion i possibly can..in 1 year all we have as fast will be faster and we have to support those that make it faster...i would rather a fast PC than a fast car ...i frag faster:D:D

I want photoshop to run quicker and smoother, 3d stuff to render faster and my multitasking to be seemless. I'm asking a lot of my old 939 socket stuff but soon its i7 time. Oh, I guess the odd game will benefit from a new PC but I don't do much gaming these days.

To make games run smoother.
"Fast enough" is hard to quantify, but certainly something at least an order of magnitude quicker than the fastest systems available today to give oneself a bit of leeway.

The real bottlenecks in computing of course are starting to become Internet connection speed and storage device speed. It will be interesting to see what direction SSDs take i.e. will the prices drop significantly, will they become 'the norm' etc.
