Why do *you* want a faster computer?

i used to run a 7600GT now i have 280GTX SLI i saw the light why people spend its amazing playing games on ultra high :D
 
i suppose it's a fair question to ask really but my question would be why would anyone want a budget/value pc if they can avoid it?

it's like jeremy clarkson say's on topgear when he's reviewing the porsche boxster, their is only one reason why you would buy a boxster over a 911 turbo, and thats because you can't afford a 911 turbo.
 
I don't any more. I used to upgrade all the time - graphics cards, coolers, switching from one CPU to an identical one in the hope that it would OC better... recently I've come to realise that my quad-core with 4GB of RAM easily does everything I want it to do, and that I've made a lot of upgrades that I haven't really noticed. My systems have always been ahead of the curve performance-wise, but I don't know if I'm gonna upgrade to i7 because there doesn't seem like much real-world benefit.

i've heard pretty much just that about the I7's that their is'nt much real world benefit (cos i was considering going I7 myself also) and about the only good thing about the motherboards (other than the processors apparently overclock very well, which is'nt supprising) is their sli/crossfire capabilities, i'm not even sure how much use it is to have sas controllers built into the motherboards anymore since solid state is here.
 
I'm a software developer by trade. If you find me a faster machine, I'll find you a way to slow it down. I have to wait ten minutes for my code to compile from clean. Sometimes that break is welcome, often it isn't. Admittedly, a lot of that is disk-bound, so I'm really looking forward to SSDs becoming mainstream.

Oh, and I'm about to switch projects. Source code for my next project takes hours to compile. That's unacceptable. I want it done now goddarnit. :)
 
So I can do stuff without having to wait.
Unfortunately I can't afford to upgrade so I have to wait a while for stuff to happen.
Also to play the latest games.
 
I have to be honest but I dont really see that gaming can be used as a factor anymore?

I dont find my fatest PC runs games any better or worst than my slowest.

A decent GFX Card and lots of RAM on a quick HD and you're fine.... A good Socket 939 setup will play all the latest games perfectly well.
 
HD respone, read, and write are the bottleneck in most systems.
I think people over estimate what they need.
Like 8GB ram, cmon few people will actually use that if the whole market is considered.
I get by on 2GB just fine, and i wish i spent more on a GFX card than on my quad core, which really, i dont need.
Core 2 Duo (8400), 2GB PC6400, p35/p45, 9800 gt / gtx 260 is all you need.
and spend the extra dough on some SSDs if you really want to see a boost in performance.
