Why does 80's music get such a bad rap?

Maybe it's just me, but I think a lot of bands and artist wrote some their best stuff in that decade.

For example.
Van Halen, Metallica, Rush, Iron Maiden, Dio, Ozzy Osbourne, Guns n Roses, Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, The Traveling Wilburys, AC/DC, David Lee Roth, Pink Floyd, Stevie Ray Vaughn, Megadeth, Slayer, Aerosmith along with others that I just can't think of.

I'm a 90s kid, so charts was all about dance vs indie for me, plus a handful of boybands but not too many. 2000+ and it's all boybands, reality show carp and R&B, and people with multiple entries in the chart e.g. Rhianna no thanks to the download chart. Dance music became too cheesy too from around 2002 onwards, DJ Sammy partly to blame for that. I now go on amateur / unsigned sites like Soundclick to look for the dance stuff I like, as commercial appeals to me less and less as I get older.

I would say that 1980s was definitely the best era for films though, especially action. People actually had to do stunts e.g. in car chases, give me Mad Max over Fast & Furious any day. Same goes with James Bond - give me the older ones (pre-1989) please, although I will admit that I did like Skyfall.

Every period in time has some awesome music and some terrible stuff. The 80s is no different in this regard at all.

I wasn't even alive in the 80's yet, I really enjoy the majority of the bands/artists mentioned in the OP.

Love 80s Music, yes there was some guff but most of it was top and I still listen to it now, proud to be a child of the 80s! :)
