Why does Apple only make 1 phone?

The reason Apple don't make an iPhone with a 5 inch plus screen is simple:

My wife loves the size of her iPhone as it fits into her handbag along with all the other crap women seem to think they need all the time!

She also thinks my Samsung note 2 is stupidly big. She even thinks the S3 is stupidly big and even though she loves the widgets and customization of my phone, she will never buy one because its too big in her opinion.

She is obviously, wrong!

In my experience women don't seem to mind the larger phones precisely because they can just dump them in their handbag. It's completely different for men as I would guess the vast majority of us carry our phones in a side or front pocket, so it is an issue.

I seriously hope they don't go any bigger than the 4" display - My friend recently got a Galaxy III and although it looks like a really nice phone, and the OS performs well - it's too big for my liking...

I have the Galaxy S3, its the first android device I've owned. Damn thing is slippery as hell without a case and it is slightly too large vs my older iPhones. I do wish Apple will still have 4" devices in production because there are folks out there who want them. I fear 2013 is the year of the 5" phones though.

Op was asking about apple making 2x sizes of iphone, not replacing the current iphone with a much bigger one. It just seems quite a few people are looking at it that way.

That phone didn't really changed the market did it? Apple weren't the first phone to make the full touch screen phone but they were imo the first company to do it well. They feel like premium products and even people who aren't sharp when it comes to technology can use it easily. Now near enough every phone is based on the same full screen touch interface and usually a few buttons at bottom or on the side. Same goes for the iPad, not the first company to make a tablet but the first to make a consumer friendly tablet and make it work well. The interface is so clean and things work well, we have Android based phones with great specs that just don't work as smoothly as the iPhone. Companies which change the market usually do quite well but it remains to be seen whether Apple can keep it going because things can change. Who would have thought 10 years ago Nokia would be in the position it is now?

That image is a bit deceptive though, unless I'm missing it, it doesn't have any of the Sony Ericsson phones like the P900 which had touch screens and were smart phones.

The original iPhone did not feel like a premium product at all and lacked even basic functionality like 3G (seriously, what were they thinking with that?).

It was not until the iPhone 4 did it actually have high quality look and feel. These days the products feel every bit as expensive as they are but this was certainly wasn't the case per iPhone 4. The original, 3G and 3GS felt as cheap and plasticy as much of the rest of the market.

When they released the iPhone AT & T and O2 had no 3G network. Given the strategy to provide exclusivity to networks without major 3G coverage may explain why Apple decided not to include 3G.

I have heard the longer battery argument as well but I think it was purely down to the fact the networks selling the phones in the major markets just didn't have 3G available at the time.

Every other company makes more than 1 phone, even Samsung just brought out a Galaxy Mini...

So buy the Galaxy - great phone in its own right and will still sync with your Mac, job done, problem solved, move on. :p

all apple stuff are pretty much the same, its like android, they have these various Operating systems, yet they all the same bar the addition of some new features or different layouts..

i like apple products, only one i own is a Shuffle, but i did have an old G4 PPC AGP which wasnt bad for my first mac computer, but as a windows user i find some mac features/ functioning limited, just handy in a way because i use itunes, same like their phones, they cool, but all look the same and not a whole much of difference between the models, id rather just buy an android or normal phone than buy an overpriced apple and their build quality is questionable, ive never seen so many replacement parts online for a phone and so many broken or not 100% working phones and its like hang on these cost well over 200/300 and so on new yet so many people are replacing parts and breaking parts etc, doesnt exactly grab me into the iphone buying circle..

whether they should make a different range for phones is debatable, probably just end up the same way as the iphone lol

The original iPhone absolutely felt like a premium phone. I had one for years and it wasn't plastic.

What was it made of then? My girlfriend had a 3GS until she changed it for a 5 and that certainly felt plastic - and I thought it was largely the same as the original externally?

For me the 4 was the first iPhone that really felt beautifully crafted.

The original iPhone was aluminium, glass and plastic.

Hope the same :)

No it was quite a bit different and you're right, the 3G/S were plastic-y and I avoided them.

The original iPhone however was a mostly aluminium back with only the bottom inch or so black plastic. It was a nice phone I kept it for 3 years.

Worth mentioning that the 3G and 3GS had widespread issues with the casings cracking after a couple of years (just with normal use, no drops or anything like that). Typically from the dock connector, but can be from anywhere.
