Why does everyone hate James Blunt?

I've never understood claims that the reason for disliking a singer is populist.

In fact, the exact opposite is true, and here's the reasoning.

The majority of pap in the charts / being bought, is due to airtime.

Airtime itself is not an indicator of a song's merit, but of the persuasiveness of the label's marketing department.

Why do they bother then? Because airtime and exposure has been categorically proven to increase sales, repetition breeding familiarity and popularity.

So the only reaon you like James Blunt is because he was marketed well, and you have fallen foul of repetition.

For those that dislike the monotone, derivative castrati - Good on you - You've shown independence of mind and spirit.

I applaud your better judgement.

I have to disagree, I don't even listen to the radio. As I have said before I had James Blunt's album months before it became the wedding/funeral classic or whatever it is today. I'm not going to stop liking an album just because lots of people like it as well.

I agree with the few who have said that it's fashionable to hate James Blunt. I don't think everyone hates James Blunt, just the indie fans as he has gone to mainstream for them I think.

Nope only those with taste hate him ;)

I think I'd struggle to be classified as an indie fan but I dislike James Blunt, maybe even hate him although that could be slightly too strong a term. He somehow manages to be bland and inoffensive yet irritating at the same time, paradox though this may be. He is overplayed which solidifies my dislike further, I don't listen to commercial radio or indeed any radio beyond what I hear when I am out yet I could probably tell you half the words to his songs(and not just because they are repetitious). It seems to be that everywhere plays James Blunt, maybe because it works as background music but it is on in supermarkets, shops, pubs and sometimes even clubs.

I dont like him, or his music.
Its boring.

I cant say its rubbish, because he clearly has more musical talent than me, however, in my opinion, his talent is misdirected.

He is so inoffensive and that bothers me. It's so middle of the road and, well, boring. Nothing about him is interesting. Some people were offended by Geri's skirt when the Spice Girls were big. I just can't see *anything* with this artist that makes me sit up and listen. No agenda, no unique selling point, nothing. He's too neutral about everything.

In conclusion. Grow a pair, Mr Blunt. You know what happens to people who stay in the middle of the road too long.

i dont hate him. i hate his music, because i just find it highly boring, and it's not a pleasant feeling when it hits my ear drum.

if you like it, why do you care if other people do, too?

Some of James's music, can get very repetitive, but I like it and it's definitely some of the best music this country has produced in a while! :o

yeah, listen to 2 bands. Oceansize and Pure Reason Revolution. then come back and tell me that Britain hasnt been producing awesome music for a substantial period of time. your problem, and the problem of the british music-buying population is you're not looking hard enough for good music. you're just settling for what the radio throws at you. there's a lot "better" music than james blunt around.

Add to that the reems and reems of Drum and Bass that has been coming out of this country for a long while, or any electronic music as this country has been a solid bastion of electronic for a long time with the likes of James Lavelle, Aphex Twin, Plaid, Squarepusher all still pusing out british music of very high quality.

to be honest, if i were to have sat there naming all the different outfits across the genres, i'd have been here all night. those are the most fresh in my mind :) we are a great country for music, we're just misrepresented by the likes of Damien Rice, James Blunt, Kaiser Chiefs, Franz Ferdinand and all the other C-Student musical outfits that NME are currently whoring
