Why does everyone mount their TV on the wall?

Ah, I hadn't expected so much discussion and variation. I won't feel bad about sticking mine on a stand then :)

And no, no kids here :p

Couple of pics of what I was talking about .... might even do a more detailed thread if anyone is interested.

Wall mounting is fine at the right height. You're right about people putting them too high, people seem to assume above the fireplace is the right place but it's going to be at least 2ft too high.

If you're going to wall mount, sit on your sofa and see what height suits you so you can watch it comfortably.

Bubba, as long as your centre speaker is directly above/below the screen you'll be fine.

Ideally the tweeter on your centre should be in line with the tweeter on the front left and right to make front panning sound nice and smooth, since my setup is more audio orientated and I have some 5.1 audio I listen to this takes priority, I have to say though I have spent a full day watching movies with my tv where it is and have had no problems at all.

Here is a picture of my living room (WIP) the TV will sit just above the centre cabinet (you can see the holes for the tv bracket)

Here is another picture while I was doing some testing before finalising positions etc to give you a better idea of height (excuse the mess).

Mounted mine to high i think, its ok but could be better, took me 6 months to get off my arse and mount it and it would prob take me same to lower it abit :)

It should but having had mine like that and also about a foot below the main speakers I can say it makes no noticable difference. At least to me.

I have mine mounted above the fireplace. Whilst I agree that it is not technically at the correct viewing angle I doesn't look to bad and it frees up a corner of my lounge which I intend to fill with a fish tank.

When given the choice of TV slightly too high or no fish tank then I can put up with a compromised viewing angle.

Unfortunately, in my current place, the only position for the TV is above the fireplace.

I don't particularly like it that high, but the layout of the room (and the godawful, defunct, unusable fireplace) means that it's the only place for it.

Also - there is the advantage that it keeps grubby fingerprints off it from my 18 month old son!

Unfortunately, I'm soon going to have to do the unthinkable and mount my TV stupidly high.

The misses wants to keep the fireplace and doesn't want me knocking the chimney breast out / replacing with a false wall, especially as the flooring was laid less than a year ago.

I can't lower the size much due to a solid granite back plate for the fire, at most I'd be able to drop the wooden mantle place 2" :/

The kittens are destroying speakers and I'm just waiting for one of them to have the TV over. Add to that sticky fingered nieces that frequently visit and the woman wanting to push one out herself, I'm going to have to mount it. (TV and the misses)

It might look stupid but you could mount it at an angle above the fire. Looking side-on, there would be a small gap at the bottom and a large one at the top, that would make the viewing angle more perpendicular.

why don't you just mount on an articulated arm and put it to the right of the fireplace, just to the left above where it is now.

You can swing it out to the right position, and tuck it away if you having a party in your house or whatever, and it'll mean it's not stupidly high.

I think a lot of people do it because it is safer, if you have children the tvs can fall on to them and hurt them.

well if my little darling of a son manages to knock over the TV it had better hurt him, its probably the only thing that would stop me throttling the little git..... :D

Mine is above the fire, but we dont have a fireplace.

It is higher than our old telly but due to the size increase it doesnt feel higher...it definaitely feels more cinematic, and we have never suffered from neck ache or eye strain while watching it.

Oh, and mounting on the wall looks nicer and neater in my opinion, it also takes up no floor space obviously and kids cant touch it.
