Why does forum not go to last unread post?

On many of the other forums I am on, when you click into a post, you go to your last unread post. So you start where you last left a thread.

On here though, it goes to the first post since you were last logged in. This means if I didn't check a particular thread the last time I was on, I then have to scroll back, sometimes many man-sized pages, to find where I left the thread.

Why is this? Can it be changed?

It doesn't work properly, sometimes it goes to the last unread post but generally it's very hit and miss. I only occasionally find that it works as expected.

I'd say 99 times out of 100 it is fine for me, but yes it does sometimes get it wrong.

It depends on two things I think, cookies and time. After a period of time, the forum is "cleaned", usually at night I notice it most and all new posts reset. If you browse on multiple devices, doing so, can take you back over posts you have already read, which I assume is the cookie issue.

i was under the impression it gets it wrong because it's based on when you last viewed the forum and not when you last viewed a thread, so say you post in a thread at 8am then leave, then visit the forum at 12pm but don't view that thread you'd posted in. when you then visit again at 7pm it'll show you content since 12pm even though you never viewed the thread replies between 8pm-12pm. i may be wrong but that's the conclusion i came to when noticing the last viewed gets it wrong.

Quite possible. That makes it useless as far as I'm concerned.

Enter thread, click "view first unread" on left side top of page above first post.

You have revolutionised my life! sort of.

You don't even have to open the thread first, the first unread arrow is right next to the thread name.

But I knew this one!

On a related note, does anyone actually know what the various envelopes and arrows to the left of the thread title when viewing the sub forum actually mean?

New posts, you've posted in the thread, no new posts, and no new posts but you've posted in it (there is also a padlock).
