Why does google earth look so bad compared to maps.google.com and why is it so slow compared to maps.google.com ?
Have I missed anything in the settings? Here's a pic with earth vs maps and the options.

mapsgoogle.jpg

Any hints on making the picture in earth load faster ( how it is atm it's like 4-6x as slow as maps.google.com) and the higher res textures sooner ?

EDIT: ram cache = 1.5gb and hdd cache 2gb, opengl doesn't help.

Looks like you're running an old version of GE. It went through a few versions where the download would suddenly stop before completing if the OS had more than 2Gb of RAM available. Go grab a copy of GE 5 from earth.google.com and all should be well.

On the subject of GE, my mums friend swears that it is a live video feed...
He says that when he is on it, he can send his daughter onto the driveway to wave and he can watch her as she does it.
I just said it's crazy talk and that its only images (refreshed maybe once a week?).

Am I right, or am I just a newb?

Definitely not live, and even once a week is extremely optimistic, the area where I live is about 4 years out of date on Google Earth

New version is better but still not as good as maps.google.com.

Also noticed that using maps.google.com in chrome is slower than in ie7 :S, even though chrome is faster everywhere else.

Anyways earth5 is still MANY times slower than using maps.google and it still loads the high quality textures a little bit later than maps... Why can't they make earth as fast and detailed as maps ?

sounds like he's just looking out the window, at the driveway

I wish they would properly cache resolution down to one or two zoom levels from the begging view, also including all the boarder lines etc, i honestly don't see why it need look so poor on opening, fair enough when you zoom in it has to download the data but thats no excuse for it looking so poor to begin with.

If your talking about the picture quality and why some images of places are not very clear its because that they have not taken any high quality pictures of that area....

Definitely not live. On some places you can see side by side pictures of an area in different seasons. Cool effect anyway...
I once read about a rooftop picture of a building in the US. There were sunbathers or something on the roof yet the road next to the building was covered in snow. :D

my area has just been updated, and the pic is still almost 2 years out of date
lmao at the guy saying its live, some people still think its all done from satellite , were as most of it done from a plane

It tends to vary by area but generally I find Virtual Earth (maps.live.com) to be more up to date / better quality. It has the additional birds eye view taken from an aircraft for most areas as well.
Google Earth has the better overlays etc though.

just been on Virtual Earth (maps.live.com) and its crap
its 10 years out of date lol
were i work there still building it in Virtual Earth and we moved in to the place in easter 2000

Depends on where you live I suppose.

The VE pictures for me look to be about 2 years old for the sat picture and 1 year for the birds eye fly by.

I'm suprised the images are 10 years old, using your location of sawley from your avatar there is Birds eye view pictures and they only started doing the flights to add those a couple of years ago...
