Why does my computer sound like it's try to post every 5 mins in Vista?

It's weird and starting to really annoy me, but randomly makes a small kinda beep from inside the tower, then sounds like its kinda boosting up.

Seems to sometimes tie in with a new winamp song, causing maybe half a second jolt. Any idea what it could be?

Its probably vista powering down and then powering up the hard disks.

Go into control panel --> power options

Here pick high performance then go into:

Change plan settings --> change advanced settings --> hard disks --> turn off harddrives --> never

See if that fixes it.

On some motherboard you get a beep to warn of overheating. Is it a new build?

i cant see how that would be causing a beep every 5 minutes if it powers your hard drive off after 20min of non active use.

From his description it sounds like a harddrive starting up, especially if he has more than one drive. The "jolting" is the similar too, when I first installed Vista I noticed it was regularly powering down and powering up my drives (I have 3 so then 2 drives the OS wasn't on would shut down and restart regularly).

O i know it would cause that. But what i mean is, if its happening every 5 minutes then vista would need to be turning his hard drive on and off every 5 min. Which isn't 20min so somthing could be wrong with his hard drive.
