Why does my internet cut out when ethernet port given IP?

I have my laptop and PC connected via crossover cable to share files etc.

They both have wireless connections for the internet. I want my ethernet to have static IP addresses but when I assign these the internet cuts off? It's like the internet connection defaults to the ethernet connection instead of the wireless conection?

How do I fix this? I have had it working before but since I formatted both PC and laptop I can't get it to work.

You havent put ina gateway on the ethernet connection have you?

Nope. Just the IP and subnet.

I have to disable the ethernet connection in order to connect to the net.

Any other suggestions?

You haven't put it on the same subnet as the wireless have you?

Yes it was, I've now changed the ethernet to have 255.255.252.0 instead of 255.255.255.0 and I can't ping the laptop anymore :confused:

Thats the subnet mask, is it on the same subnet?

ie. are both using 192.168.1.x or is the second using 192.168.2.x??

The IP address of the PC is:
192.168.0.* 255.255.255.0

The IP addess of the Laptop is:
192.168.0.* 255.255.255.0

Should I change the IP address of the laptop to read 192.168.1.*?

Ok, list the IPs configured for the physical and wifi connections on both PCs, sounds like you just need to use a different subnet for the wired though.

I've changed the subnet of the local ethernet connections on the PC and Laptop and they're working fine now
